Xeriscape interest

There is interest in the dynamic of Xeriscape landscaping here. with water restrictions and some metering and a sence that more may be coming  people are looking for less maintenance of yards. Using rocks and natural plants and ground cover is taking hold.

The naturalists had a recent presenter on natural plants for British Columbia and eastern Washing ton .Something she referred to as the the great basin desert. The natural plants or those from this area take less water then the ones from the coast. And beyond. as well a yard looks good in ground cover whether its plants such as Bear Berry plants or rocks and crush.

On Saturday the 12th there is another workshop one by Gwen Steele, a Director of the Okanagan Xeriscape Org. It is endorsed by the city but cost 35 dollars you can register by calling the City of Merritt at 250-378-1050

The session is 6 hrs 10 am-4 pm.

Local mill

There are two significant sawmills here in Merritt, one Aspen Planners is talked about as a super efficient modern mill. Talking to a forty-year employee of the mill  he said that the mill has 60 employees in three shifts about 20 a shift. Two fork lifts at night and four on days.

Decades ago the mill employed hundreds at 3 shifts and they also have taken over the Werhauser operation that employed up to 150 people.

The other mIll tolko industries is also an efficent mill , and we enjoyed  the presence of there quarterly managers meeting here recently in the civic center downtown. About 25 managers met here for the sake of that private operation.

The industry is touted as progressive and reponsible here.

Power poles

There was a pile of old power poles in an empty lot off Voght street, now removed by an apparent salvage contractor. The pile had old cedar poles some with a pieces of galvanized channel iron still attached from a stabilizing project more then two decades ago. some not, also in the pile were some recent pine poles that had been preserved with copper and arsenic solution and replaced in the last few years.

A source with in Hydro says that some pine poles are rotting and there is a swing back to cedar ones.  He also said that concrete poles like  the ones on the Valley View hyway leaving Kamloops going to Vernon are a problem because of  electrifying and disintegration because of it.  The source says that the power must be off to work on the poles because of the electrifying of the poles.
