Five year sniff.

There is a young man going around the area of Quilchena and Chapman with a gas sniffer he says that it is routine testing and that you can expect that a test sniffer will happen be about every five years in residential areas. Fortis BC tests annually in commercial applications. Leaking natural gas smells like rotten eggs and is unmistakeable.
The man has a proper picture ID around his neck that identifies him is a Fortis contractor. ( still it never hurts to call and ask for a description if anything looks out of sorts)

The Fortis BC utility people were here working on one of their isolation valves this week. The technician said that natural gas is sniffed for in residential areas once every 5 years for leaks, 1 yr in commercial areas.

Natural gas is odorless and colorless so the utility adds chemicals to make it smell like rotten eggs.

Editors note: it is not to be confused with Carbon mon oxide which is poisonous and a by-product of burning fuel. natural gas can cause suffocation by displacing oxygen.

Winter

The temperature is dropping to about -11 c today with serious snow on the ground here in Merritt at our 600 odd meter home. It feels homey and there is less traffic.

When we quipped to Everett Spahan that he was dressed like he had just come out of the Mongolian Step he affirmed the metaphor and posed for this picture.

A motorman from Beaver Drilling gave us a conversation last week. He said he is working on a Double Drilling Rig , in the Rocky Mountain Foothills. For natural gas, his state of the art rig is usually involved in oil exploration. The motorman sowed me a key chain model bit and talked about whip-stocking a method of pulling back in a hole and stopping rotation of the String and hydrological turning the bit and controls a horizontally inclined take off. This makes for a managed drilling platform into a field.
