There is a young man going around the area of Quilchena and Chapman with a gas sniffer he says that it is routine testing and that you can expect that a test sniffer will happen be about every five years in residential areas. Fortis BC tests annually in commercial applications. Leaking natural gas smells like rotten eggs and is unmistakeable.
The man has a proper picture ID around his neck that identifies him is a Fortis contractor. ( still it never hurts to call and ask for a description if anything looks out of sorts)

The Fortis BC utility people were here working on one of their isolation valves this week. The technician said that natural gas is sniffed for in residential areas once every 5 years for leaks, 1 yr in commercial areas.
Natural gas is odorless and colorless so the utility adds chemicals to make it smell like rotten eggs.
Editors note: it is not to be confused with Carbon mon oxide which is poisonous and a by-product of burning fuel. natural gas can cause suffocation by displacing oxygen.

A motorman from Beaver Drilling gave us a conversation last week. He said he is working on a Double Drilling Rig , in the Rocky Mountain Foothills. For natural gas, his state of the art rig is usually involved in oil exploration. The motorman sowed me a key chain model bit and talked about whip-stocking a method of pulling back in a hole and stopping rotation of the String and hydrological turning the bit and controls a horizontally inclined take off. This makes for a managed drilling platform into a field.
Shale gas production has had a dramatic effect on supplies and the industry suffering is setting its hopes on conversions from high carbon use such as coal and oil to clean natural gas. according to the Horn River News in gas suffering Alberta, June 19th 2012, this may take years, and there are concerns it may not be timely for Alberta if major players go elsewhere.
