There are two new buses at the City hall parking lot where they park the BC transit buses that service the city. The old buses are on a replacement schedule that a source says is 200 thousand kilometers.
The buses are owned by BC Transit a subsidised provincial transit system that rationalised transit to the cost of the gas taxes that go to highway and road maintenance.
An unconfirmed source at the city said that they don’t know when they will be in service as the operation is a non-profit headed by a volunteer, and arms length from the city.
The buses still have temporary operation permits and need outfitting for disabled as they are used in transporting to medical appointments in Kamloops and Kelowna.
As of this morning a confirmed source says that they will be in service next week and that the buses were 2 years over due for changing. The disabled equipment is on them now. ” we are supposed to operate them for 5 years and they have been in service for 7.”
There are 5 paid employees of the volunteer board that run the two bus system Serving Merritt and Lower Nicola.
