Life follows art!

An object that had to be defined by a court as Art to escape duties and taxes as a piece of (metal for industrial purpose, with others). The piece called Bird in Space came to the US in the  1920s and  had duties applied. The matter went to court  in 1926. The controversy got this conclusion in favor of the artist:

The object now under consideration . . . is beautiful and symmetrical in outline, and while some difficulty might be met in associating it with a bird, it is nevertheless pleasing to look at and highly ornamental, and as we hold under the evidence that it is the original production of a professional sculptor and is in fact a piece of sculpture and a work of art according to the authorities above referred to, we sustain the protest and find that it is entitled to free entry.

This was the first court decision that accepted that non-representational sculpture could be considered art. Source Wikipedia.

The piece bears a striking resemblance of the olympic torch made for the 2011 Olympics in Vancouver Canada, No trouble came out of its use in a very fine event in Vancouver.
