Crab apple

The leaves have fallen away from this crab apple tree behind the Merritt Desert Inn, leaving red crab apples. Interestingly there was a black bear destroyed in the tree a few years ago . The bear was drawn by the fruit. The bear would make a great picture now is he was in the tree.

The right hand portion of the picture shows the lawn bowling club house. In a poetic way we might say that Joe and his elderly bowlers are symbolic of the effect ,having the working part of their life behind them they are enjoying the fruit of retirement and a productive life.

This rig gave a pipeline supervisor an option to transverse a recent maintenance job here to the natural gas line. The line built in the 195os takes gas to the lower mainland through the Coqihalla .

The supervisor said that he had replaced three valves for his part and had a week to go to complete the job. Surerus  Pipeline  the contractor  is from fort St John. He will be returning to work in Ft.St.John.

Crews have been staying in the downtown In Town Motel from  the green energy project, the pipeline maintenance ,railway upgrade and other projects. win_20161017_17_40_56_pro

The motel is owned by 5 partners, Chin, one of them enjoys the diversity of Merritt. Chin has recently redecorated his 44 rooms

There is the 2016 edition of the pacific forest rally here in Merritt this weekend. The event will see 22 rally cars on two courses Friday and Saturday.
A ceremonial start will be downtown on Friday between 4:30 Pm and %:30 PM on Granite avenue. The Helmer Lake forest special will then take place followed the next morning by the Dillard forest special. at 9:am. A Mab Lake Forest special will begin at 1Pm that day, concluding with another Helmer Lake Forest special at 3:45
A 9 PM End of Rally: event will see a winners podium at the Desert Inn downtown.
The 2016 Canadian Rally Championships Top standings has Maxime Labrie ahead of the pack with 49 points. His closest challenger is Wim van der Poel at 36.

Wim will be in the race driving car number 003, a Mitsubishi lancer evolution IX FB.

Sean bought a Nissan leaf, used a 2013 with 30,000 KM on it. He got a charge in Merritt this week and is ” seeing how far east he can take it before returning to his home in Vancouver’.

The Local Naturalist Society is having the first of its fall/ winter monthly meetings on the 15th.
The meeting features a members photo night as well as an annual business meeting and election of directors.

Evening meetings of the Nicola Naturalist Society are held at 7PM on the third Thursday of the month in the Lecture Theater of NVIT (Nicola Valley Institute of Technology) on Belshaw Road, Merritt. Admission is free to members. We have awesome raffles. Nicola Naturalists

Junior A hockey camp is on in Merritt 44 young men are trying for 22 spots for the 2016/17 season for the Merritt Centennials BCHL hockey team.

The team is the oldest franchise in the league and has may professional players coming from its operations including Ed Beers and Paul Kruse. A pre camp was held in June in Abbotsford inviting 15 – 19 year olds to try out.

The over 4 decades of hockey in Merritt has also produced  serious support including a booster club, media support and a committed fan base .The team didn’t make the playoffs last season.

A little home on the range went to feedlots….

The Nicola Valley Ranch Rodeo, the other rodeo is being advertised for the 27th of August at the Rodeo grounds south of Merritt.  Merritt has had a labour day weekend rodeo for 58 years including the one coming up on the 3rd and 4th of September.

Merritt area has had many small rodeos  at ranch’s and reserves over time. there was once a suicide run on a very step hill at the Upper Nicola Bands Douglas Lake reserve. It was discontinued because  of injury and the possibility of cruelty to horses.

The rodeo bunch are civilized here now however an event can still become tragic if not properly managed. Merritt has produced clowns to manage bulls in riding events.

People like Bob Barker from the price is right have been instrumental in making change to attitudes that may effect stock and the way people perceive responsibility to them. Hollywood has also softened toward the use of livestock in movies. We invite the public to take an interest in the Nicola Valleys animals husbandry and attitudes that actions generate.

Bicycle theft is a common crime committed commonly in cities, areas with high population, as well as on college campuses. According to the Police Department at the University of Colorado Boulder, it was found that most of the bicycle thefts that occurred were due to bikes being unlocked, improperly locked, or locked with devices such as a lightweight cable or low-quality U-lock devices.

One can prevent bicycle theft by avoiding using bicycles with quick release wheels, as these are easy for anyone to take off without the use of any tools. Furthermore, one should use a strong U-lock to secure their bike. One should only lock their bike to sturdy structures and should not leave the bike in one place for too long.

The way in which the bike is locked to the structure is also important. It is important that a wheel and the frame of the bike is locked to a structure so that one’s wheel isn’t stolen and left with only the bike. Source Wikipedia

Music fest back Photo KDG

The rocking river music festival is on this weekend with president and performer Ken Hess with the eight ball. The festival is at the former Merritt Mountain Festival grounds.

There are some new glass cases at the Canadian Country Hall of Fame on Quilchena Avenue, downtown Merritt; they include clothing from some lessor known artists from eastern Canada, as  well as famous ones.

The availability of tickets have never been a problem in the past for any event.\, held at the grounds in Merritt. Local volunteers are being used at the site including Chamber of Commerce ones.

A pop up store organized by 5 local artists is also at the CCMH of Fame.
