Under the influence

Crumpled tickets are often found on Voght street, and often for intoxicated in a public place the allegation carries with it a one hundred and fifteen dollar fine. That can be disputed with in 30 days. Two tickets  neatly typed by the arresting officer except for the details of the offender show 34 tickets  spread issued from the same book in a one calendar day cycle. If you are from Missouri you may wonder why the tickets are found close together and within sight of the Police office. It could be that the people that are issued them are repeaters and talk, to each other.  We believe that if these tickets are not resolved by the people that throw them out, then they wind up in collections and the people are harassed into paying them.

It would seem that a reasonable course of action would be to have a designated driver to take you home as the system is ready and eager to embrace even small malfeasance.

Bye the bye if you are drunk in pubic there is no charge if there is a responsible person with you to take charge and especially a privileged person like a blood relative.

Continuing education

A contractor called Valhalla safety is providing a H2S seminar in Merritt on Sunday there are many locals here that go to work in the oil fields of Alberta.

A n explosion in a gas well in Robb’s  Alberta is not related to the seminar other than the 11 injured workers would have taken similar training.

Hydrogen sulfide gas is a deadly heavier than air gas that is expelled in drilling oil wells.

Invasive weeds

The north east slope of the Nicola Valley in Merritt is getting some warm sun in the afternoons and snow is absent in large patches , at the middle foot about 2400 ft above sea level . Green invasive weeds are seen  today getting the jump on the natural grasses still dead. Bear Berry and Dalmatian ,Toad flax both seem to be asserting themselves for spring.

Bear berry also called Kinnikinnick  it is native to Oregon and when here is somewhat invasive. The plant is gathered in summer for teas ecetera and has many folklore type uses and remedial properties.

Linaria dalmatica or Toad Flax is native to  South Eastern Europe and western Asia and is considered a weed here. However they are hard at it this week in being green before others are green.

Ultrasound

There is a very dedicated hospital auxiliary here in Merritt and they raised  a considerable sum for an ultra sound machine for our local 8 bed hospital. The regional hospital authority took it last year and in the midst of a provincial controversy about two technicians that were responsible for misdiagnosis in a Vancouver Hospital and their ultra sound equipment.

The local ultrasound is now being returned to The Nicola Valley Hospital . And  by the by Kamloops has “Canada’s first and only dynamic upright MRI Scanner”, as a quote before you come clinic. We hope that there were  no politics involved. And  we think that the option from Welcome Back MRI and Pain Management  1 hr away in Kamloops  will be utilized ; as not medically necessary  treatment, as well as Workman’s Compensation, police, fireman, and soldiers are legally able to use it. And maybe some lawyers that want a  second option/opinion.

Mike’s father Keith still lives just out-of-town in Lower Nicola and has a great bird hobby that includes  some exotic species. Car Crash

No injury’s reported by the owner. And she had confidence in the car insurance as she had a file number from the attending police. Tire marks across the lawn  were littered with lens pieces and she said her concrete step saved here from more damage.

Road Kill

Deer are particularly bad to hit with a car as sometimes the height is about right to roll the deer up the hood of the car and the body fits the windshield about right. Serious damage can occur as well as injury. The city workers were on the Voght street right of way yesterday morning  removing a small to medium-sized mule deer from the ditch. With  out ceremony its body was placed in the bucket of a back hoe to be taken to city land above  current cemetery for burial. The worker in charge said they are no longer to put them in the local landfill.

He also said its the first one he has had to deal with but there are many deer about in the night. We assume speeds are not enough to catch deer by surprise ,as out on the highway. The freeway is fenced both sides with high fences against deer and moose and some underpasses are provided for them however that may not always prevent an animal that can cover a lot of distance in a night from coming  on the highway near a town and continuing well into the freeway. Be where, of speeds at night that may over drive your headlights.

Clean Fire Hydrants

The city ran and add to hire CUPE workers last week in on of the local weekly’s they were to fix potholes and keep up these things . Most all the fire hydrants were gone through and painted up starting after a local hotel burned down. The fire was reported as arson. In the middle of a labor dispute and some one had opened  a number of these about town diminishing the pressure to fight the fire.

The tag says no not connect without permit;2000 dollar fine, we think it’s not intended for arsonists but the responsible public.

The crime is yet unsolved.

Found property

A bicycle is said to be waiting to be picked up by the bylaw officer from the downtown policing station. Found property is kept 3 months then disposed of , by crown assets disposal in the past some bikes were given to non profits  for fund-raising. To have an insurance claim a bike needs to be stolen and a file given from the police. Most bikes found are under the 500 dollar deductible limit for insurance some bikes are really expensive. We think that it is a burden on police resources to be chasing these things. So keep your bike out of sight and out of mind.

Remember there is a six month limitation period on petty crimes and you always run a chance of being called as a witness to a prosecution in that period.

In general attention should be paid to terms of coverage of policies still loss prevention helps us all.
