Twenty years a toastmaster

In 1992 I joined the local toastmaster club. It will be 20 years this month.

The organization is in over 80 countries and this year they had the youngest world champion of public speaking. After after going through the Club, Area, Division, District ,and Region contest a 25-year-old male contestant won at the International convention. Kudos to him and the 60,000 other people involved in the process that saw a speech delivered that was original , well presented  and a win for a generation.

Population: a recent announcement of closures has drawn fear of a population decline. 60 jobs from two small mining operations and about 80 from the closing of Ardew Wood Products are in the public mind.

Editors Note we feel that these jobs are going to be taken up with placements in the close geographical area. Merritt still remains a practical community with exception amenities makin living  here and working elsewhere a option for these placements. Ardew has the last remaining burner in town although not in use, it serves as an icon to the other mills that are quite modern.

Imature bald eagle

Yesterday morning I saw a dead eagle in the back of a pick up. It looked frozen but imagistic even in its fallen spread eagle position. By the time I got up to the conservation office to inquire the owner of the truck had already surrendered the bird. A confirmed source said there was no crime suspected or breach of any regulation. “it starved to death” ,” this time of the year is hard on them” on examination “muscle had been consumed”.

There is a right to sustenance and ceremonial use for eagles by first nations. And its been about 7 years since non FN have been able to get permits to harvest. A confirmed source says about its remains “it will probably go to a local first nations person.”

Editors note: Solders fighting in winter with little food have been autopsied and found to have had shrunken organs consumed to keep all warm blooded creatures at body temperature.

Five year anniversary

The local transit society had a gathering to celebrate 5 years in Merritt. The society operates two buses.  The buses  serve Merritt and Lower Nicola . An official said they started with a rider ship of 1500 a month and now have 4600. Steve Harwood an official from Victoria introduced Alastair Murdock a councilor and a chartered accountant.Alastair did a lot of the work getting transit to Merritt.È We started with volunteers for the first 6 months. He may have refered to transit that was run by Community futures before they secured BC transit. BC transit is a unionised province wide system

A rider can have a trip around Merritt and out to Lower Nicola for $1.50.

Cake and coffee were served to about 30 people.

Fuel price protest

On Saturday there was a small protest against gasoline prices here in Merritt. gasoline had been selling for $1.31 a liter and is now at $1.23. Not low enough for some they had posters out asking for support . A small bunch of demonstrators were noted on Dewolf Way  on Saturday.

Their poster invited people to bring hotdogs, kids, best cheers and smiles.

A contact person for Merritt citizens against gas price fixing is noted as being Michelle at 250-315-9184

A source said that gas prices in Kamloops an hour away were $1.09

Editors note BP the huge oil company is reported to have received a multi billion dollar fine recently, this may add insult to injury if gas prices are artificially manipulated to accommodate the fine.

TGIF- smart meter

have a great weekend

There was a small service van outside the Nicola Valley Aquatic Center. An unfamilar worker was putting a smart meter on the Building, He said that they are installing the last of them about 25,000 in the province. He thought the total for the province was an amount over 1 and 1/4 million.

We agreed that when they start broadcasting in January the consumer will be able to go online to their hydro account and see the amount of consumption. As well the peak usage. He had no opinion if there would be an off peak rate.

Community futures

There has been a Local presence of a federal government facilitator here for a several years. The Nicola Vally Community Futures Society. They started in an obscure rented office on Granite avenue next to the cable providers studio, over two decades ago. A surge in their relevance came some time after when getting Western Canadian Diversification into their portfolio. That is a federal government department that helped get industry to diversify into the western provinces for the industrial heartland of Ontario and Quebec. The organization purchased the Bank of Montreal building on Quilchena Avenue and set up a bigger presence. The society had elected locals and was succesful in many ventures. They had a big influence on the Merritt Mountain Music Festival.

The organization has reorganized and according to board member Rick Isbister are renting a place in the Old Chamber of Commerce office under City hall on Voght Street.

The branch of the Bank of Montreal transferd most of their accounts to The Local Credit Union.Their old building is shared now by Work BC ( the provincal government and Community Futures N=Thompson Valley.
