Three names are on the ballot for a local by-election in September. The nomination period ends tomorrow followed by a withdrawal period.BoB Baird a former mayor, Harvey Keys and A. Polmans have filled papers already.

The local Macdonald’s is having a free coffee week at the restaurant . A small regular McCafe is gratis from August 6 through the 12th.

The receipt says discounted to zero dollars even without any purchase.

opinion: the regular coffee is smooth and wet a good choice for busy people.

Merritt Pro Rodeo

The long weekend, for labour day, here will see the Merritt Pro Rodeo come. The annual event is held in the Rodeo and Fall Fair grounds to the south- west of  the town.

The motto of the organization is ” get her done” which includes work on the stock ,  as well as clowns and other entertainment.

This year will be the 53rd edition on September 1st and 2nd, it is CPRA approved with 6 major events. Prizes are up to 2500 dollars. Membership due.

Caviar productions

A film production crew occupied the center of town last evening here in Merritt. The production company with leased equipment shot a scene with a runner crossing the finish line in a race sources say that it was a Nestle Water commercial.The production company hired some locals for extras paid the city for crowd control and paid property rights to buildings in the shoot. The extras included  most of the  editorial staff  of the two local papers. They pay minimum wage  10 dph, and they were said to be needed from about 10 pm to two AM. All they crews and equipment were gone this morning.At least three production company names were involved in the shoot. Today in history: August 3, 1900

Post and Beam

There has been a facelift on the 3 business mall on Voght Street.Central Park Plaza,2840 Voght Street.  It now looks like a western shop with batten board and covered sidewalk entrance.

The 10×10 timbers come from a portable sawmill owned by Joey Starr’s in Mammet Lake a unincorporated rural area west of town on 97c off highway 8 .

Joey Stars was a principle in an auto body shop yard and building that became the office for the new pellet plant that was idled.

The Plaza is occupied by Century 21, Real Estate ,Beyond the Willow,an artisan art and picture framing business, and Paul Lesage Construction, the general contractor that did the facelift. There is also a law practice in the building in the realtors.

The local college Nicola Valley of Technology has  67 people in their catalogue under staff. Making them a significant employer in the small community of Merritt British Columbia.

Today a person is applying for an administrative job that was published on the school website for some time. Admissions and Registration Officer in the salary range of  37k to 47 K

There are also 10 other positions of employment advertised.

New paint

Two of the four buildings on the Baillie property got new paint this week. the building that houses the tourist information booth and the storage and workshop were both painted again with white paint and dark green trim. Khameleon Painters from Mission did the work as a husband and wife team. They are expected to come and do the house and barn at a later date.

The Baillie house is a City property operated under contract to the Nicola Valley Heritage Society. It offers a public garden for sitting and free coffee and iced tea. It sells hard ice cream as a fundraiser. It is located on 2200Voght Street, in Merritt British Columbia.

By election

The nomination packages are available at the city for the upcoming by-election. the nomination period is the first 10 days in August. then followed by a with drawl period. Then your stuck on the ballot come what may.

The by-election is costing the city 15 thousand dollars the same as a general election held every three years. Some are upset at Norm Brigden for resigning to take a job on Vancouver island. This because of the cost and upset.
