Former flag of CanadaThis flag goes back always, Canada flew it before the current one  adopted in 1965 , it was unofficial flag as the jack of UK was still official however it gave Canada a distinctiveness from the 1890’s and   sanctioned by order in council and various other methods but never by parliament. Parliament is the legal authority in Canada. Our current flag was passed by parliament after a plebiscite.

Mineral ExplorationThis pickup  owed by a family business in Princeton and  used to transport crews and equipment to mineral exploration sites where continuous core samples are produced , layed out in boxes that  read like a book. The samples then can be split, logged, and assayed for mineral content. According to the mining association 95 percent of the province  is explored, and when talking to a man from the UK about it he says that leaves 5%; to us that’s huge. Copper mines in South America that had lower labor costs and shipping concerns dampened the industry for more than a decade, here however, in BC, the industry is  enjoying a bit of a come back. The industry at its zenith employed about 30,000 people in good high paying jobs. That was about the size of the civil service and they purchased a lot of expensive supplies. Safety standards where high and corporate involvement in the community mirrored democratic ideals.

Arrest, part of a normal day for the thin blue line,  this recent arrest in downtown Merritt shows an officer taking into custody a suspect, he can on reasonable suspicion detain a person for 24 hours. That person can have a lawyer present for questioning, and ask for a writ to produce him in court with charges against him . Special laws after 911 undermined that civil right with out suspending all civil rights for citizens.

Youth project

 Youth Mural Project , Merritt BC  OCT, 2010

This project is working toward urban renewal. World acclaimed “Muralist Michelle Loughery” is part of the non-profit that runs this program.The youth project while not on the scale of the Very succesful “peace corp” of the US 1960’s era and is more local, however the scope of the artist is out and about the world so its effect goes beyond our doors.  This particular work is off the parking lot and Garcia Street side of the local  First Nations administration building  many of the participants and the  person in the picture is a member of the  First Nations, Michelle has authored numbers of country music star’s murals and an inclusive mosaic at the local museum.

Local Construction

This house is being completesd in the Crown Hill area of town an area that has many large well landscaped homes. The view is good and amenities close. It  must have been better in buyers market , to build when many contractors were available.
