The UK is still parting from the EU. Today was the exit date preordained by the law that governs it. The UK is trying to get better terms for a split the EU is concerned about better terms for exit effecting the attractiveness of membership with other states. A European Union council election is coming May 22 2019. The UK has a soft exit date for mid April longer if some conditions are met.
Brexit was to occur, it is deferred by a 3rd failed parliamentary vote.
The Nicola Naturalists will be having their April meeting on the 18th.
The Merritt-based Nicola Watershed Community Round Table has a new partnership with the Grasslands Conservation Council of BC, promoting education and research at the Laurie Guichon Memorial Grasslands Interpretive Site near Merritt. Thompson University Professor Lauchlan Fraser and FLNRO ecologist Rachel Whitehouse are leading this work and will give a joint presentation on the project. Controlling invasive weeds, like knapweed, is a huge problem across the grasslands of southern BC and this project is testing some innovative methods to maintain healthy grasslands. Exciting work happening right on our doorstep.

Laurie Guichon a local rancher and environmental activist, husband to the widowed former Lt governor of BC Judy worked with the local roundtable on issues until his death by accident 1999. The Guichon family have been very active in the Nicola Valley including work with ground owls.
The meeting is in the NVIT lecture theater starting at 7PM. Free parking and no food or drinks in the theater. The Nicola Naturalists invite ” All welcome membership or donation requested.”

The Nicola Valley Community Garden Society is having a presentation on March 19th 2019, 6 30 to 7:30 a Earth Walkers 2090 Granite Ave in Merritt.
The talk is on caring for houseplants and tropical plants. The presentation will be followed by a meeting of the Garden Society.

Stephanie Winton is a conservation researcher with Thompson Rivers University and Environment Canada. She recently completed her Master of Science degree assessing the impacts of roadkill on the population of Western Rattlesnakes in the White Lake Basin. Roadkill is a major and worldwide threat to wildlife, particularly for species-at-risk like rattlesnakes that face existing natural constraints. Stephanie’s research highlights the severity of this issue for rattlesnakes and led to the installation of ecopassages for snakes. Her study has important conservation applications with the burgeoning human development in BC’s interior valleys. Excellent research on an enigmatic species.

The provincial government is developing policies ( guidelines) in respect to developing around rail corridors.

The guidelines are designed to assist local governments and rail companies in reviewing and determining general planning policies when developing on lands in proximity to railway facilities. The guidelines also establish a process for making site-specific recommendations and decisions to reduce land-use incompatibilities for developments in proximity to railway operations. A key component is a model review process for new residential development, infill, and conversions in proximity to railways
Merritt experinced this when the CPR stopped operating here in the 1980’s. Merritt Building supplies infilled with a warehouse on Voght and Coldwater. The Garden center also infilled on Voght and what should have been Canford Avenue. The rails were taken out according to policy at the time that enabled the CPR to do that if the sevice was discontinued for 2 years and no one filed a complaint. The Coquihalla highway took up the freight sevice displaced by the lack of rail.
