Nice if they counted some of these…
The Nicola Naturalist Society INC is having its bird count on Saturday the 14th of December in Merritt BC. This will be the 26th annual count by volunteer members. The stats are compiled and sent to the Audubon Society.

This pyror beetle showed up after the wildfires of 2023. I believe it was anyway. It was photographed on a wooden edge of an apartment building. These beetles live on burnt wood according to sources.

The Christmas bird count has 120 years of world wide data at the Audubon Society . Good to our feathered friends and be especially mindful of migratory birds as they are protected.
Here are some highlights of the bird count conducted by the Nicola Naturalists Society this winter in the Merritt BC area.
7 teams of counters were out and had what the club called a pleasant day of counting . A notation that species counts are often effected by food supply an exceptional Douglas Fir cone drop made for a high count in Pine Siskins last year. Siskins were missed this year and joined 2 other species well below average: American Gold finch 9 ( average of 48) and Robins 1 ( average 23).

Coordinated with the Audubon’s annual count the Nicola Naturalists will be out this coming Sunday.
You don’t have to be an expert birder to participate in Christmas Bird Counts. Participants spend all or part of the day in a group covering a specific section of the 22-km diameter count circle. It is a great way to get to know the local winter birds and contribute to the world’s longest-running citizen science project. The Nicola naturalists had their presentation last night and DR Kerridge told all about bats. He dispelled some beliefs in particular, bats are not blind but prefer sonar for hunting. He kept bats and said they were expensive to keep as he had to buy expensive meal worms and toss them up toward the ceiling.
Some species of bats have been clocked at 90 km an hour.
About 60 people enjoyed the presentations including the local preamble, of slides and stats. the christmas bird count was related of interest were the 13 Great Blue Herons counted.
