We found a tick on us after going through some tall grass near new construction on the North end of Merritt this week. The dry grass at this time of year is often a transfer point for ticks. Dogs can bring them into your home.
Multiple ticks were also reported on persons hiking in the Southern hills about the town here.
Ticks can carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever, like all rickettsial infections, is classified as a zoonosis. Zoonoses are diseases of animals that can be transmitted to humans. Some zoonotic diseases require a vector (e.g., a mosquito, tick, or mite) to be transmitted from the animal host to the human host. In the case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ticks are the natural hosts, serving as both reservoirs and vectors of R. rickettsii. Ticks transmit the organism to vertebrates primarily by their bites. Less commonly, infections may occur following exposure to crushed tick tissues, fluids, or tick feces. Source Wikipedia

Attractive nuisance is a liability owners, hazards open to view need a certain amount of diligence.

The attractive nuisance doctrine applies to the law of torts, in the United States. It states that a landowner may be held liable for injuries to children trespassing on the land if the injury is caused by an object on the land that is likely to attract children.[1] The doctrine is designed to protect children who are unable to appreciate the risk posed by the object, by imposing a liability on the landowner.[1] The doctrine has been applied to hold landowners liable for injuries caused by abandoned cars, piles of lumber or sand, trampolines, and swimming pools. However, it can be applied to virtually anything on the property of the landowner.

There is no set cut off point that defines youth. The courts will evaluate each “child” on case by case basis to see if the “child” qualifies as a youth.

If it is determined that the child was able to understand and appreciate the hazard, the doctrine of attractive nuisance will not likely apply.[2]

Exercising valves

Exercise water valves by turning

No not casting out devils, but turning the water valves buried below the roads so they are able to function when needed. This city worker estimates that there are about 700 valves in the city in the main water lines. They do not exercise the valve that is near your sidewalk as there is a cost benefit to be considered.

If there is a waterline failure at your home the liability rests at the valve, anything on the other side of the valve is the homeowners cost to repair. The trench from the sidewalk to the home itself can be thousands of dollars in machine time.

Country Church

Happy Easter Photo KDG

Happy Easter

There is a little country church about 5 minutes north of Merritt BC at the head waters of the Nicola River coming from Nicola lake. It is said to have been the first of its kind in the valley that was mostly contacted by Europeans in the 4 quarter of the 19th century.
The little church has posted a service notice for the Sunday the 27th at 2PM. It will be done by the minister of the local United Church in Merritt.
Of course its next to the Nicola ranch, and some old buildings as well. Buildings including a court house (unused),a main residence and a store. But the best thing is that this time of year there may be some calf’s being born in the fields and eagles will be trying to steal the birthing remains for a tasty snack. If the weather is cooperating the glint of sunlight on many items will be a visual treat. There may be cowboys about and a Sunday hush will be over the expanse of field and rock. A peaceful mood of rest in the old church graveyard may highlight the bent markers and give an onlooker a key to understanding how toil and hope work together to promise a future then seal the accomplished with stone and rest.

Beef cattle get moved about from summer and winter range. Being fed all winter on the ranch then being moved up to higher pastures to graze on what nature provides makes an economy that we all have a stake in ( except Vegans).
Most range access by road is controlled by metal grated cattle guards in this area however it is good to close any barbed wire fence after use if one is still in service.
There are a number of feed lots here in the Merritt area. The lots function all year long, they are used for dairy cattle that are being matured to two years before being moved to the lower mainland for milk production.

Herd laws make farmers liable for loss of stock not kept behind fences, there can be failure in fences, however collisions with livestock are less frequent now.

The press is a 20th century phenomenon in its present form. Oral communications and book publishing flourished for antiquity and through the middle ages but only since modern constitutions guaranteed a free press has it been so proactive and investigative. In times when things published were usually the dictates of authorities  a separate press and library system ensures democracy.

Off the grid

Driven in part by eco footprint a couple starts life a little different.
photo KDG

A young couple were on their way home to north central BC on Monday they had just bought a new home. The home was off the grid on a wheeled Vin numbered  tow trailer. For $50,000.00 the two hundred odd square foot home included a sleeping loft The home was meant to be parked off the grid. A Japanese stand up bath tub and a shower were the only thing in the small second room in the rear of the home. The appeal is no taxes and its paid for. The area of the province they live in  probably still supports squatting, however acquiring land would certainly lead to an attractive future. The couple said they just want to be free and not trapped by debt.

The unit was built in the Untied States , ordered and paid for 2 years ago when the dollar was at par. They took it complete except for finishing paint as ” we are not sure of the colour we want yet.”

Editors note: staying with the program can lead to success but taking risk can add a flavor to life that is unique. Both are acceptable and considered rights in Canada. The ability to arrange your life to your advantage may cause someone else difficulty as well as your self. Forest cutting rights as well as road usage and private land are a restraint and if you were to do something like build a tree house you may be surprised. Permission while not always required is still desirable.

Freedom of association was alive and well in Merritt BC, the provincial cattlemen association met here over the weekend. Douglas lake cattle company is about 40 minutes away from downtown and many smaller cattle operations are in the area.

In response to booming demand for beef in rapidly growing Vancouver, the Interior stock industry went into high gear in the wake of the railway’s opening, spurring on something of a golden age in BC ranching. In 1907 the Nicola branch line of the CPR was built into the Nicola Valley to serve the booming stock operation at Douglas Lake, which was already one of the country’s largest and for many years second only to the sprawling Gang Ranch on the west side of the Fraser, which has since shrunk in scale, leaving the Douglas Lake as the largest. The ranch includes leased grazing land as well as directly leased or titled lands, and extends to the edge of metropolitan Kamloops and towards Shuswap Lake, spanning most of the high country of the northeastern Thompson Plateau.

The Douglas Lake Cattle Company has faced many controversies. It has been claimed that early on, the ranch’s land holdings were expanded by pressing large amounts of cattle into the pastures of smaller neighbours. While the cattle would later be removed the damage was done. With their feed for the year consumed by Douglas Lake’s herd, the homesteaders would be forced to sell. Douglas Lake Cattle Company has also aggressively restricted access to both private and public lands. By buying up thin strips of land along major arteries they are able to control wide tracts of public range. In many cases locked gates were placed where Douglas Lake has no legal claim to the property.[citation needed] While this is claimed to preserve grasslands, some say it appears to be a business maneuver. Douglas Lake Cattle Company charges up to $100.00 a day to fly fish their private lakes (that they maintain by stocking, cleaning, aerating, etc.). There are public lakes that you can access for free (Douglas Lake is public) or pay an access fee (Salmon Lake).

On Saturday there was a hail storm here followed by a 4 hour power outage. The hail was soft and smaller then the storm in the 1990s here that caused millions of dollars in damage to roofs and cars.

The storm followed the BC  cattleman’s convention and the power outage disrupted their dinner.
