Frank Ritcey is the Provincial Coordinator for WildSafeBC, based in Kamloops. In this presentation he will focus on the public perception of charismatic mega-fauna vs. bugs and snakes, and the challenges in trying to promote the preservation of some of the ‘lower’ creatures on the public’s list of what is important. Expect some pretty cool videos of both the charismatic mega-fauna and some of Frank’s favourite “less desirable” species. Frank was raised in the wilds of Wells Gray Park by his pioneering mother, Clara Ritcey, and Park Biologist father Ralph Ritcey. His love of nature has been with him his whole life and he still spends much time filming and studying nature. Frank often contributes to CBC’s popular North by Northwest show.

The local naturalists society is having there monthly meeting on Thursday, November 15th 2018, NVIT, top of the hill Belshaw avenue in Merritt.

BC Gone to pot…

The regulation of use and sale is in effect for pot today with one official store in Kamloops BC.

Provincially, control over the sale, supply and possession of non-medical cannabis is established through the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act. The Cannabis Distribution Act establishes the provincial government’s role as the lone wholesale distributor of non-medical cannabis in BC. In preparation for legalization, the provincial government, on October 5, 2018, released new and amended regulations for BC’s legalized non-medical cannabis system. Notable regulatory changes include:
A maximum possession limit of 1,000 grams for non-public places (e.g. at home);
Prohibiting smoking and vaping within six metres of doorways, windows, air intakes of public buildings, bus stops, or bus shelters;
Permitting indoor consumption of cannabis in certain public places (e.g. hotel rooms (if permitted), designated rooms in hospitals, assisted living facilities and retirement homes);
Allowing consumption of cannabis in recreational vehicles and trailers if they are parked where camping is permitted and being used as a private residence;
Exemptions for the consumption of medical cannabis on school property, buses, trains and boats;
Prohibiting the operation of a cannabis delivery service;
Finalizing violation ticket fines — $230 for smoking cannabis in a prohibited area, and $58 for vaping in a prohibited area;
Applying the 7% PST to all cannabis sales (medical and non-medical), in addition to the GST, federal excise tax and 15% wholesale mark-up issued by the LDB.

Thirty one animal and environment interactions representing a month of your attention.

The mission of World Animal Day, is “To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. It’s celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare source wikipedia

Today October 4th is World Animal Day. In Canada, there are many organizations that promote the welfare of animals, one being the protection:  World animal protection .

“end their pain and suffering” is a clarion call to those that care. We demonstrate what we are by the way we treat those in our power. so today think about those that are in your reach. In BC a fire season  this summer may have had a negative effect on creatures and not withstanding the habituation of bears you can make a small difference in birds and small creatures habitat , standing against poaching and exotic pet trade and escape as well as many other points of action..

Alternate Energy:

The local Merritt Naturalists are having a presentation on the ecology of bats for their October regular meeting.

Wind turbines generate emission-free electricity. Bats are a sensitive wildlife that can often get killed by wind turbines. This presentation provides insights into the impacts of wind turbines on bats, reviews information on bats in BC, presents the methods for detecting and identifying bat species using echolocation call analysis, and lastly reviews the bat acoustical monitoring program at the future Mount Mabel Wind Project (30 km north of Merritt). Martin Ince, founder and president of MKI Wind Energy and the proponent of the Mount Mabel Wind Project, has been working in the wind-energy industry for over 17 years, as a consultant across Canada and most recently as a wind-project developer in BC.

Meeting time is 7:PM, at the NVIT lecture theater top of the hill on Belshaw avenue, Merritt, BC, Ca. Free parking, no food or drinks in the theater, membership available at the meeting.

Bus business…

The BC municipal politicians have added a 4 hr session to their convention on September 10th. Called the Greyhound session it is to address the announcement of a loss of service and access to BC communities after the Greyhound company announced withdrawal of service on November 1st 2018.

The transit service in BC gives service within communities’ but the service between communities has been a more or less monopoly with Greyhound. The service is not well taken in some remote areas and Greyhound is claiming it is not able to make a profit with the obligation of service to small market towns.

We in the small town of Merritt have a handy dart service for medical appointments in larger neighbouring  communities’ like Kamloops and Kelowna, it may be the only option come November.

A motion spot is also on the agenda for the policy meeting regarding bus service.
