Hydro
Green energy project has address. File Photo KDG

The Trans Mountain bunch have repaired the trail that they maintain near their Burnaby South oil infrastructure. The reality is often people have to live next to industry and we say thanks to those that are in that sacrifice. We appreciate the fact that they are often the alarm when things are out of control and that they have made a trade off ( we hope with empowered choice) .

A long-time stream keeper and neighbour of the Burnaby Terminal expressed appreciation for Trans Mountain’s trail restoration work and riparian habitat enhancements. Regularly used by the local community,  the neighbours noticed and appreciated the trail repairs.

Cell phones, hydro power, fuel all need infrastructure and it sometimes comes with a potential cost of enjoyment. However the law maintains the right of quiet enjoyment of private property at the level that owners have when acquiring it. Good luck and thanks to those that can…

Forestry changes call.

Multi year implementation of forest practices…

Changes beginning in early 2019. The government expects to make changes over several years. They are looking for several outcomes:

  1. Improved relations with first Nations
  2. Restoration of public Social contract.
  3. Provide certainty in log supply.
  4. Give land managers a better ability to promote natural resources.
  5. Provide range planning and streamlining.

Stay warm with slippers…

Cold feet? BC Hydro is recommending warm slippers to lesson your demand on heat.

File Photo KDG

Do you have a conflict at home about how high the heat is turned up? How about a desire to lessen your CO2 contribution? When you go to bed is there a proximity to cold feet? BC hydro is recommending soft warm house slippers to help out with energy consumption!

Ongoing 50 dollar offer.

Hydro has an offer to win a 50 dollar credit on your bill by reducing your consumption by 10 percent.

But we’re not here to talk about dad’s, or granddad’s slippers. We’re here to look at the type of slippers that – in this the month of extended Boxing Day savings – can translate into comfort, style and a lowering of the thermostat for energy savings. One tip: If you equip your family with slippers, the timing will be perfect for joining Team Power Smart and starting a 10% Reduction Challenge and a shot at a $50 reward.

A little by the many is a lot..

The utility is also thanking the public for the cooperation during the recent storms and the large disruptions that it caused.

The crown corporation BC hydro conducted a poll about the feelings of people on the state of severe storms in BC. The utility claims people believe that there are more storms and weather events that may effect service.

Some meetings in Poland, Ottawa, and BC’s Economic Plan are in the fore front now luckily we have a lot of hydro capacity to cushion  against the current energy crisis and future ones with out as much dependence on fossils…

The impact of storms in B.C. has not gone unnoticed by British Columbians. A recent survey commissioned by BC Hydro found more than 75 per cent of British Columbians agree that storms in the province are getting worse and 20 per cent indicate they have experienced more outages in their neighbourhood in recent years.
In B.C., falling trees and branches are the primary cause of power outages. B.C. has three times more trees per kilometre of line than anywhere else in North America. The combination of trees and adverse weather account for nearly 60 per cent of all outages.

Hydro has some suggestions for the interim to be prepared for outages:

BC Hydro recommends British Columbians prepare for weather-related power outages by having a well-stocked emergency kit on-hand that includes:

  • a flashlight
  • extra batteries
  • first aid kit
  • non-perishable food and water
  • Opinion: our experience has been positive with BC Hydro as they demonstrate competence in restoring power in Merritt.

TGIF- $138.9 per liter…

After many weeks of $1.40.9er liter the price of regular gasoline has dropped two cents per liter. The CBC has been reporting that Canadian crude price is low, 13 dollars a barrel low,and the Alberta government is concerned. Some oil officials are calling it an emergency as West Texas settlement prices are dropping as well.

Cushing Oklahoma is the contract settlement point for contracts and has been for 30 years. Grades and content makes a big difference in crude prices.

West Texas has been a benchmark price for settlement prices but lately has been discounting prices of entities such as OPEC Basket.

Western Canada Select dropped below 20 dollars a barrel last month and commentators are saying that Saskatchewan can not continue to rely on " quirky" pricing for budgets.
It seems that the people of Alberta may have demonstrated collective wisdom in their no vote for the 2026 Olympics last week.
The future market for benchmark oil in December is $56.77 at this writing.
We are not protected from tariffs on artificial price controls from the
Americans in the free trade agreement. It seems we need to tough it out in this market.

Frank Ritcey is the Provincial Coordinator for WildSafeBC, based in Kamloops. In this presentation he will focus on the public perception of charismatic mega-fauna vs. bugs and snakes, and the challenges in trying to promote the preservation of some of the ‘lower’ creatures on the public’s list of what is important. Expect some pretty cool videos of both the charismatic mega-fauna and some of Frank’s favourite “less desirable” species. Frank was raised in the wilds of Wells Gray Park by his pioneering mother, Clara Ritcey, and Park Biologist father Ralph Ritcey. His love of nature has been with him his whole life and he still spends much time filming and studying nature. Frank often contributes to CBC’s popular North by Northwest show.
