Fishing lakes

The Nicola Valley has access to many good fishing lakes and the Chamber theme has been a lake a day as long as you stay .Chataway, Tiner ,Bobs, Gwen , Lilly , Marquart, Ludbum and  Antler are all lakes with personality and style.

Many lakes are Forest service maintained and have docks for tying boats to.

Aboriginal day

June 21 is Aboriginal day in Canada not a paid stat holiday but a national observance just the same. this year they have changed the venue from Monck Provincial Park to Rotary park here in Merritt. The Monck Park location has been the same for many years and is of interest to the local first nations as there are remains of round houses at near a sandy beach there.

The planned events stat at 11.00. And there is usually some colorful costumes as well las speakers  to view and listen to.

Stroller roller

There is a poster in the window of the Baillie house inviting participation in a moms and stroller walking exercise. Meeting at rotary park 1:00  March through June  for an hour of pushing strollers with others.

The ad is not gender neutral,  June 1st is also the start of bicycle month in BC’s lower mainland.

Health and the environment should be the concern for the best interest of people. Opinion: we applaud all efforts to these ends and especially when they are inclusive.

A local councilor,Norm Brigdan has resigned his  seat and is moving to Vancouver Island to take a new job. The course for filling the seat is that there is not an unreasonable delay.  The election is 80 days after the appointment of a returning officer. The talk is for a September election.

There is a photo copy of a speeding ticket displayed in a building in the commercial district of downtown. One hundred and ninety six dollars for 100 k in a 70 k zone ; note says: right at the change and asks the question are the police officers pirates.  There is also a note on a boarded broken window saying I pay 7800 dollars a year taxes  the city pays 2.1 million for police and this is  all I get ,talk to the Mayor.

Editors note : Merritt British Columbia has a population of about 8000 and pays 70 percent of the costs of the federal officers contracted to supply municipal policing. In March the RCMP renewed a 20 year contract to supply municipal policing to the province. Right after signing an agreement the force hit municipalities for a substantial raise.

The old timers in the Nicola Valley say not to plant your gardens untill all the snow is gone from the local Iron Mountain. or the long weekend in May. Only one event has fully occurred as of today.

Bright Red Book Shelf

Literacy Merritt has a number of book selves about the town. Books on the honour system can be taken and returned with little control. There is one in Brambles Bakery and one at the CPO office on the 2000 block of Quilchena.

A source says there are about a dozen locations where used books of all kinds are available to take read enjoy.

Exhibition of art by Fame Mackney at the Court House gallery is on this week.The show runs from May 11- June 9th with a reception Saturday, May 19, 4-6.

The Gallery hours are Thursdays 4-8 pm Friday and Saturday 12 noon to 6 pm

Fame has a gothic style and presents a number of works of human form, characterized by the Director of the Gallery as mild erotica.

The Gallery is endorsed by the Arts Council and the British Columbia Arts Council.
