Vancouver 125

Antarctica at its finest

yes

There is a good book out at the Country bugs book store it sells for just under 50 dollars and it chronicles the time of Vancouver in a pictorial commentary. The City of Vancouver is century and a quarter old and is a dynamic beautiful city in a surreal setting of harbour and snow-capped ski mountains.

The book is by Chuck Davis and is called the Chuck Davis history of Metroplolitain Vancouver

Furnace upkeep

Spoke to a person at Nicola Plumbing, a long time second generation family business here in Merritt. He recommends to have your furnace serviced at least every two years to prevent a cold house from a failure. Filters, cleaning, thermal coupler and gas leak scan is all included. sometimes a carbon monoxide test in the house is appropriate.

Every year is optimal and the biggest thing is the check for issues. A froze up house is a terrible event and it takes a lot to fix something that can be prevented. Fall or early spring is the time to do it as the construction season is somewhat wound down.

Natural gas furnaces are very efficient for gas usage these days and are compact , especially when equipped with a heat exchanger.

Things can escalate when failure happens in cold weather.

An international community

OPINION:

We have a person here  working from Nepal, we much appreciate his perspective coming from a country that has recently become a republic. He spoke recently about world empires and we know how much trouble colonial and empire building have been to humanity in the past.  We regard his experience as valid and useful in understanding the drives of people and how sometimes unrealistic ambition has damaged to the whole.

The gentleman works here for the forests at government and was recently at a toastmaster meeting as a guest. We remember that the international agenda of organizations put in place after the Second War were to” make the world safe for small nations” We Canadians are grateful for our place in the world and our significance that has matured under that mandate and we wish Nepal the same in their self-determining future.

Accident

Sources say that there was a major truck accident on the freeway north of here Tuesdays morning at 2 am. Including a fatality it is believed to have been a multi truck accident.

We say that small cars in general should avoid large trucks for vortex or wind dynamic concerns. there is no indication that passenger vehicles were involved in Tuesdays wreak.

The Kamloops paper is also reporting that the local detachment commander of the local RCMP police has been charged with taking evidence from a locker. Its not clear what the charge is but more are pending. The man had a good record in the Clearwater detachment and a good record of  drug enforcement. “Kamloops daily news”

There were 5 tour buses out of Victoria parked this week across form the Canadian tire outlet.  They buses touted Bio fuels on their sides. When asked a driver said that they operate on bio fuels made from soybeans. They have a supplier in Victoria that produces it from beans that he thinks are grown in the US.

Where ever they come from the buses run on a mixture of 90 percent bio and 10 percent diesel fuel.

Bird count

Merritt, British Columbia

Image via Wikipedia

No not a character from Sesame Street but on the weekend the local Naturalists were out counting birds. A couple of reports say that there was a successful count of  many hundreds of mallard ducks by counters in the area of the Chutter ranch east of Merritt a couple of miles. My self, I counted 97 mallards in town from the Nicola Street bridge to the old CPR train bridge a distance of about 1/2 mile . At the bridge were a pair of golden eye ducks  at a healthy distance from the last mallard.

Jerry Sanford a member of the naturalist society and a retired geologist said he speculates that a motel owner may be feeding them at the Nicola bridge. The January 2 date should not be confused as it is the “Christmas Bird Count”

There is a coördinated bird count about the province on that day.

Hydro billing

No one has  reported any thing but some people we talked to were not aware that they did not have to pay for the smart meter that the utility is supplying in British Columbia. This in our view opens the door to  some scurrilous  people that sell things associated with hydro metering or micro waves in general.

Opinion we think that this is a good time to be cautious about any one coming tot your door selling things. caveat emptor has been balanced in Canadian Law by fiduciary responsiblity but if you can’t find them when something goes wrong its mute.
