Triathlon

About 40 grade twelve students are about the 1900 block of Nicola avenue at this writing  holding a finish ribbon for competitors in a school triathlon. he competitors team up in threes and each take an event including a bike from lower Nicola an unincorporated area about 5 miles south on highway 8, and a run from 1900 Nicola , up through Parker behind the bench and around back by the golf course to 1900 block Nicola a distance of about 6 KMS and finally 20 lanes both ways in our olympic indoor pool. The demeanor of the runners is hard  and full of effort, as vocal cheering takes place.

Opinion:this is a good sign for those young people involved and boads well for those that seem to take it serious.Kudos to Merritt Secondary School.

Book sale

This morning the regional library saw a line up for used books at the opening time of 10 Am. there were about 30 odd people that waited to get at the used book bargains presented . The sale will go on for 2 weeks and one free book  per day coupons are in the newspaper and at the counter of the library. a steady stream of people enjoyed picking up used paper backs  for 50 cents and hard covers for a dollar.

What is left over after 2 weeks are destined for the recycle bin and the cycle of withdraw will begin again. The library stays fairly current and some bppks are only a year or so old when withdrawn.

Working to be re-elected to the local council here Shelly Sanders is a long time resident of  Merritt.  Shelly worked with Ron Sanders and others to establish the Walk of Stars project and has had organizational capacity enough to organize her provincial professional associations convention several times; here in Merritt. Her vocation is  lab technician at our  local hospital and is favored to be reelected in our view.

Opinion:

The 19th November mandate  is fast approcing and we like Shelly for council

Bears

I took a picture of a pile of bear scat on the sidewalk behind the local A and W off Voght street yesterday Am. the Scat was full of mountain ash berries something not that attractive a meal to bears there are crab apples a block away. A rather large pile, meaning a large bear.

A model bear and long term celebritybear of whistler was shot yesterday because of; as with all bears was too adjusted to humans which can be an eventual tragedy as bears have conditioned actions sometimes called instincts that can  be activated by humans and when the way the humans always lose. A bear can travel  very fast  when they decide to come after something and people have little chance of escaping without some bad results.

Smart meters

The  provincial hydro authority is going to be installing smart meters around the province. This will give them the ability to better manage power. As well the customer will also be able to do the same .No word on the thought that there will be two rates, one for off-peak and one for on. There was a proposal for an energy project that took water out of our own Nicola Lake and stored it till peak usage time. The marriage is more than obvious and we will be listening for the re-emergence of that project here in the future.

The local library has a meter for you to borrow to test where you are using your power the smart meter will build on that principle.
