Last weeks of summer flowers…

The time of day when sunshine enlivens flowers is fast approaching  its annual end. The full moon in September ( a full Corn Moon ) : Farmers almanac, is on September 24th 2018. If we are lucky here at 600 meters+ we may not see a killing frost until then giving a huge season instead. However we have to get through the full moon and its whiles August 26th this weekend, the moon is called a Sturgeon Moon and is in a forecast cool and wet time. The Sturgeon moon is named for the large amount of fish in lakes where the Algonquin fished.

The Baillie House in Merritt  has a sitting garden with flowers and convenience. It s operated by the local Heritage Society and welcomes you as the Cities Down Town Tourist Info center. Enjoy the flowers…

Cold fusion, solar probe, EV’s

The stars seem to be aligning more for the electric vehicle; at least here in the Nicola Valley. Far from economies of scale there is an obvious up tic in charging station use, meaning that owners are relying more on them for distance travel. The greatest use in our view for the EV is the small capacity 85KM range run about, go to work, and town urban application. Not requiring quick chargers. However there are some interesting things coming down the pike.

The year 2025 is the planned start-up of a cold fusion generation system. And the completion of a recently launched solar probe in its 7 year mission is about that time.

A magnetic field is to contain the fusion sparking temperatures that will see hydrogen turned into helium and Einstein’s pride, energy. All life on earth is carbon based and that means old star particles that came from suns that went through their hydrogen and stated burning helium making carbon. The data from the solar probe will be interesting in its composition and if its statements about cold fusion on earth contained in magnetic fields how it might  will fly.

The hope that cold fusion will work seems more compelling this summer fire season, once again it is a promise of inexhaustible  of cheap power without social cost.
Then my friend the EV may be even more to the point.

SUN SET

The sun is our source for life. Photo: KDG

Smoke across North America is making for interesting sunsets. Air quality is a concern however consider the context the Asian developing market has for years had terrible air quality in their bid for economic prosperity we often see masked walkers and people coping. Forest fires are a bit out of our control and a few interesting sunsets is not worth the unpleasantness  as well as effect on the old.

particles of smoke that come from the fires can stay in the air and move through the Earth’s atmosphere – all the way [from western North America] to the East Coast. The smoke sits more than a mile above the Earth’s surface, but can move down through strong winds called jet streams and have an impact on air quality Source earth sky news..

Bus business…

The BC municipal politicians have added a 4 hr session to their convention on September 10th. Called the Greyhound session it is to address the announcement of a loss of service and access to BC communities after the Greyhound company announced withdrawal of service on November 1st 2018.

The transit service in BC gives service within communities’ but the service between communities has been a more or less monopoly with Greyhound. The service is not well taken in some remote areas and Greyhound is claiming it is not able to make a profit with the obligation of service to small market towns.

We in the small town of Merritt have a handy dart service for medical appointments in larger neighbouring  communities’ like Kamloops and Kelowna, it may be the only option come November.

A motion spot is also on the agenda for the policy meeting regarding bus service.

DAWG DAYS OF SUMMER…

dog

Hot weather, thunder storms, and drought; happy Egyptian New year. Sometime after the 17th of July depending where you are the star Sirus is on the eastern horizon moving east against the sunrise. The dog days of summer are the result of this dynamic.

Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, if you don’t count the Sun. Under the right conditions, it can even be seen with the naked eye during the day. Sirius is one star in a group of stars that form the constellation Canis Major, meaning “Greater Dog.” It’s no surprise, then, that the nickname of this big, bold star is Dog Star. Learn how to find the Dog Star in the night sky. source Old Farmers Almanac.

Flop eard dog

The Dog days of Summer traditionally end on August 11th according to sources.

The rising of Sirus with the sun on the eastern horizon went along with the flood season of the Nile delta. The term dog days may have come from the star being known as the watch dog of the weather.

The ancient Greeks and Romans had a different view of the rising of Sirus, it brought drought, disease, and discomfort.
