The rocking river music festival is on this weekend with president and performer Ken Hess with the eight ball. The festival is at the former Merritt Mountain Festival grounds.

There are some new glass cases at the Canadian Country Hall of Fame on Quilchena Avenue, downtown Merritt; they include clothing from some lessor known artists from eastern Canada, as  well as famous ones.

The availability of tickets have never been a problem in the past for any event.\, held at the grounds in Merritt. Local volunteers are being used at the site including Chamber of Commerce ones.

A pop up store organized by 5 local artists is also at the CCMH of Fame.

A leash for dogs gives comfort and safety for your pet and the persons out walking or going about their business.
Merritt BC has an off leash park for dogs to run and frolic. The park is located behind the city recycle, near the open space of Voght park. There are paved walking trails that can be picked up and at a number of locations in town they go by the park and along the Nicola river. The river is expressly beautiful at this time of year with sand bars and some deep clean pools.
Bags are available at the transition points of the walking trails for picking up after your pet, and there is parking at the off lease park for some cars.
There is also a bike park available off the walking trail as it comes out of central park by the RCMP station.

Trail maps are available for free at the downtown tourist info center at 2202 Voght street across from city hall.

Severe weather

DSC_3203

The drought level board remains at the 2nd position. However the people that run it must have gained experience from last year as the marker has gone form green to blue. The sign board is located at the top of the hill on Voght Street going north to highway 5A.

We have high pressure this week with temperatures in the 30s. however a severe weather forecast has been issued  by environment Canada.

Issued at 10:03 Tuesday 26 July 2016

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Southern Interior today and there is the potential for some of these storms to become severe. The main concerns are heavy downpours and strong wind gusts, however, large hail is also possible.

###

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #BC Storm.
Details to follow soon.

Thunderheads can blow up and give downpours mid summer here in the Merritt area we usually enjoy at least one a season and every couple of decades a large size hail event comes with it. Plants should be protected to keep them when these develop.

Two dollars for pet ears from the SPCA Photo KDG

At the Shell Station next Starbucks this morning this lady was on her way to a family reunion in Alberta. When asked about her glasses she said that they came from a generic store and that the ears were a 2 dollar donation to the SPCA. “Did she have another reason to be at the SPCA,” “no I would do serious harm to someone if I worked there” was her reply.

Old pool done but not forgotten…

The city had a crew at Voght park this morning, they were running a jackhammer and breaking up some pieces of concrete that had been used as a makeshift barrier to a lane coming from the east. The concrete in two pieces about 4 meters long and something over a meter thick were very hard and full of rebar and were the remains of a public swimming pool that was enjoyed by many kids decades ago.
Curtis a neighbour said that the pieces left were wreaked 50 years ago and then the pieces were put into service as a barrier. There have been two public pools since then and both were heated that one was not. The hot summer sun of the 1960s here made the small pool look very inviting and the stimulation from the cold water put in it was pronounced.

The City would have had a population of about 3000 at that time and Fran Brownfield the teen aged guard would have know all the kids personally.
Voght park was named for the founder of Merritt, and in the early 20th century had all the amenities.

Thanks to the founders and those that added after for the joy of that open pool and Rest in Peace to the remains of that structure.

The Summer students have been busy setting up a tent at the downtown tourist info center ( Nicola Valley Heritage Society). When asked what it was for they replied that they were having a Christmas in July event on the coming weekend.
Fred at the house says they will be offering Christmas decorations and anything associated with Christmas for sale in the yard and the 2202 Voght street building, as well as books. The historical society operates on revenue from the house as well as donations.
The Baillie property is a City of Merritt Property and invites people to enjoy the common garden and historical house under the shade of maple trees.
Happy Holidays.
