The sun is setting on 2016 what will 2017 bring?
Since the winter season started last week we have been gaining daylight at a slow rate but we have gained 3 minutes ( well two and a half), giving us 8 hrs of light. The gain was 1 second on the 21st to a staggering 42 seconds today.
It is the shortest day of the year ( solstice) in terms of daylight, but it does not have the latest sunrise nor the earliest sunset of the year. This is because of a discrepancy between our modern-day timekeeping methods and how time is measured using the Sun. Astronomers call this difference the equation of time. The bands were not from jet traffic, ice fog was visible, cold midmorning temperatures and a 97 percent waning super moon, 11am in the morning.
Some of the natural phenomena seen in the sky are clouds, rainbows, and aurorae. Lightning and precipitation can also be seen in the sky during storms. The November and December super moon brought the earth close twice in a little over a month increasing the pull of gravity and the wobble of the earths orbit around the sun.

The local Arts Council Christmas show ends on the 23rd. The show features many items done by a collaboration of local artists. Mitts are one of the items presented in interesting and attractive format.
Jackie the Old Courthouse Gallery Director says that the council elected a new executive recently and a new president.
The Nicola Valley Community Theater Society expressed that part of their rational for a new 5 million dollar theater complex is to source a stable funding plan for the Arts Council.

The feeling is awful when you lock keys inside or you wonder if the door is locked at home. There is coming available remote keypad/app/remote house locks.
there is a risk involved those that are early optors as not all situations may have been addressed, however it has been sometime since Telus and hydro have promoted the futuristic. smart homes, while some things may be less then practical it would seem that remote locking and unlocking would be an empowerment.
The lock can be operated remotely by mobile device, by keypad or by old-fashioned key. There’s the ability to set it up to lock automatically a few seconds or minutes after each time it’s closed, and friends or contractors can gain access with their own temporary keypad codes.source BC Hydro.
Before you trust Uber to drive your car perhaps it would be good to be versed in controlling your front entry to your home remotely.

Photo KDG: Public buildings are kept warm and are a good refuge when away from home…
The winter solstice is a week away on the 21st at 4:44 AM, the days will start to get longer. The Spring equinox 12hrs and 12hrs night and day will be on March 20th 3:29 PM giving an 88 day winter.( strike up some Beethoven)
The 6 days could have had an effect on the start of weather here as we are six days ahead to the 23 degrees that tips toward the sun in the summer season.

Photo: KDG : eagle circling high after sudden onset cold and snow, Maybe looking for a slow to change rabbit. This bird nests near the Nicola river which is rapidly taking on ice.
Merritt British Columbia receives an average of 22 inches of snow per year, we got something approaching one quarter of that over the weekend. The 6 inches of snow saw numbers of plows back on the triage system for the first time in a while.
Tom at the corner of Merritt and Garcia said he was back to his complaint with the city over plowing in his driveway. Lower Nicola Resident Percy said that – Macdonald was out with a skiff ( eager)…

Cold weather can hurt birds caught behind

Sudden onset weather can sometimes catch creatures un aware. This Canada Goose had a broken leg and was struggling to survive.
Frozen rivers and ponds may strand fowl and other birds kudos to those tht keep feeders out for those that are caught by cold weather.

TGIF-Adieu to you Bob!
2008 home-coming for Merritt’s one hundredth saw a play by Jim Bruce produced.

Our friend Bob passed from this life on December 5th in his one hundredth year. He had danced on a table cloth on the floor at the Florentine, assisted living home, last May for his birthday (a concession from a vow, no table). Bob served in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan in the second war and was one of the Craigmont mine managers.
The mine operated in Merritt from the 1960s to recently and produced a billion lbs of copper, and supplied magnetite to coal operations in Alberta after underground operations ceased.
Bob was a man of integrity and fairness and enjoyed a long career in the mining biz and was active in the Public libraries programs, attending lectures last November. He was a contributor to the well-being of the community here and the world. KDG
