Mallards matter

Mallard ducks are the most prevalent around our place, our neck of the woods here in Merritt, British Columbia. We love our Mallard ducks.

The local naturalist club will begin their regular weekend fall and winter schedule on the 18th. Their meetings are generally most months on the third Thursday at 7:00 at the Nicola Valley institute of technology, top of the hill Belshaw Avenue in Merritt.

Happy Donald Duck Day USA

Today is national Donald duck day in the USA. It is that way because Donald Duck was born ( so to speak ) on June 9th 1934. The cartoon character like others of Cartoonist and Entrepreneur. Walt Disney the silly duck cartoons brought a lot of relief to many people during the tough times of the 1930s.

This new born brood of ducklings seemed unconcerned with sand bagging and took to the water just like ducks would.

These creatures were at the Highway 8 bridge on Nicola Avenue , Sunday,few skaters among them.

The ducks came to me as if to want to be fed….

Editors Note: the Nicola Naturalists are having their regular monthly meeting on Thursday. The group did a Christmas bird Count in December and their is likely to be a report….

Ducks on Nicola river, which way is south?

The cold is back this week with temperatures dropping unofficially to near minus 20 celsius. There is little snow on the ground and we expect that frost is building in the ground.  The Nicola river that flows through town is building ice seemingly without  concern by ducks that remain here.
