A car like this may be suitable for a passenger directed drivers certification.

September 16th new regs will be employed for passenger directed rides. Some that are in the municipal control will be under the province, Passenger Transportation Board. Licenceing applications to start on September 3rd 2019.

Passenger directed licence

One of the licenceing options under the Transportation Services network in BC is a passenger directed driver, it has three requirements before September 3rd opening.

  • A commercial class 4 drivers licence.
  • A criminal records check.
  • A suitable vehicle

BC hydro has completed the 2018 program on “30 Minute ” Quick chargers. Bringing their total to 58 in the province.

he second phase includes 28 new stations, in addition to the 30 that were completed in 2016. There are 13 new stations in the Lower Mainland and two new stations at the Britton Creek rest area on the Coquihalla Highway, allowing drivers to quickly charge up before heading to the Southern Interior – or to the Kootenays. The stations also connect drivers from Horseshoe Bay to the west coast of Vancouver Island.

They utility is now planning another phase to bring more quick chargers to drivers from Kamloops North to Prince George. Hydro Chargers

Line ups may be avoided by seeing if a charger ahead is occupied, by a smart device. There are often another 240 volt charger in the proximity of the  Hydro 500 volt quick chargers.

Merritt’s new Quick Charger has connections to Bolt and Leaf models EV.

There are at least a dozen and a half electric vehicles out there adding to consumers choice for enjoyment of the tremendous liberty of a personal motor car. Ranges vary and mixes of full EV to charging engines give a wide preference field for any one that can afford to get into an electric vehicle.

There are also 1000 public chargers and a number of quick chargers ( DC 30 minute ). There are enough quick chargers to go from Vancouver through Golden to Canmore Alberta and have use of them in nine communities. Range and planning around chargers still remain a challenge amongst users.

EVs remain a novelty at this time quick chargers may have line up challenges because of increased interest.

Carbon farmers market

The UBCM has a link on it to a ” farmers market” for carbon. Registration is available for buyers, sellers, and or local government. They are selling C3s or carbon credits.

There are a least 13 more EV chargers coming to the Kootenay region of BC through 2018. BC Hydro is installing them and they are the quick version. The 13 planned additions follow the US Border to near the Alberta border going east from Greenwood then go north along the Alberta border to Rogers pass. To side ways roads go to Sparwood and Field being the closest to exiting BC for Alberta.
The 13 are promised by the end of 2018.

Billed as Canada’s first regional and community-driven strategy to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, Accelerate Kootenays kicked off the big push with the opening of a DC fast charge station in Cranbrook. Gone will be the days when longer electric vehicle trips in the region were marathon “making the most of it” affairs that might involve going on a local hike while your car “trickle-charged” for hours at a local campground. There Is a new table at the parking arena parking lot on Voght Street. The round four seat-er appeared last week and is on a concrete platform under the maple trees that make the area so attractive for the Farmers market in the summer time.
It is also 25 feet from the quick charger and the 90 amp green highway EV charger.
It makes an invitation to bring a lunch to your EV recharge experience in Merritt. the quick charger is 20 minutes the 90 amp about 2 hours for most EVs.

Al from Westbank was using the AC charger at the charging station on Voght here in Merritt on Sunday. A retired man and his wife he made the trip over to have breakfast at the Cold eater hotel. He was happy with the 400 thousand advanced orders that Tesla Corporation had taken on their new affordable model car. When asked why he bough this Model S 85 with the 500 K range he said he opened a Prius before and it seemed like a reasonable transition. I go to Arizona every year and like the Electronics for direction Al said. He leased the car to keep the initial price down including the 10 percent luxury consumption tax.

Rod and others were busy Tuesday morning installing a Blue Reserved for EV parking marker at the 500 Volt 130 amp DC charging station on Vought street.
The blue is not to be confused with handicap parking as it is for EV vehicles charging at the station. There is also a 90 Amp (70 continuous AC charger with in reach of the parking stall.
The parking lot is used for the farmers market until October and on Saturday mornings.
Andrew a supervisor says that the markings were supplied by BC Hydro.

New years swim

The Nicola Valley Aquatic Center is having a new years eve ( after noon swim.) The swim will be on December 31st from 1 -3 PM at he facility on Mamette avenue in Merritt.
There is no charge for the swim and the pool is in walking proximity to 5 EV charging stations some of which take 2 hours to recharge an EV.

A Chevrolet volt charges up at a charging station last week in Merritt. The Volt had Ontario licence plates and is partial EV, it has a gasoline charging engine that will charge the battery as it drives.
Partial electric vehicles and hybrids are a consumer choice that does not allow for the ideological ” emission free goal but have a cumulative effect to benefit the environment, in the view of some operators. The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in rebadged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe.

Sales of the 2011 Volt began in the U.S. in mid-December 2010 followed by various European countries and other international markets in 2011. As of June 2014, the Volt and Ampera models have combined global sales of over 77,000 units, with the U.S. as the leading market with over 63,000 Volts delivered since its introduction in 2010. Opel/Vauxhall Ampera sales in Europe totaled over 9,000 units through May 2014. The Netherlands is the world’s second largest Volt/Ampera market and leads the European region with more than 4,900 Amperas and over 1,000 Volts sold through June 2014. The Volt is the top selling plug-in electric car in the United States, and the Volt and its rebadged variants are the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the world.

The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its plug-in battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge. From there its internal combustion engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle’s range as needed. When the engine is running it may be periodically mechanically linked (by a clutch) to a planetary gear set, and hence the output drive axle, to improve energy efficiency. The Volt’s regenerative braking also contributes to the on-board electricity generation. Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2013/14 model year Volt all-electric range is 38 mi (61 km), with a combined electric mode/gasoline-only rating of 62 mpg-US (3.8 L/100 km; 74 mpg-imp) equivalent (MPG-equivalent).

The Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car and 2012 European Car of the Year. Controversies regarding the Volt include the extent to which the U.S. federal government may have participated in the Volt’s development, which continued through General Motors’ 2009 government-led bankruptcy,[6][7][8] and concerns about the battery pack fire risk following a crash test that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performed on a Volt in 2011.[7][8][9] At the completion of its investigation NHTSA concluded that no discernible defect trend exist source Wikipedia

The Tesla S fully electric has had a production of about 30,000 units of the 100 thousand dollar plus car and is bringing out a new version soon to be near par for price with the volt. Range will be a factor in its use as fully EV cars are most useful to those that drive the average Kilometers of an urban driver.

There was a new Tesla model S in the charge station on Voght street on Sunday. The car had a rear personalized plate: nofossil,the plates were from the state of Nevada.The Tesla S is an all electric vehicle and is manufactured in the State of California with about 30,000 in service. There are few parts that require servicing and the braking system takes the energy and generates it into electricity to charge the battery this begins immediately when takeing your foot off the accelerator.

The Tesla model S is a four door sedan type car billed as sound stage quiet. Its production replaces that of the Tesla roadster that is seen from time to time but is out of production.The production of these cars in a moderate quantity has in part provoked major car manufactures to go into the production of EVs, there is even a Cadillac model that has a range of about 70 kilometres a charge on electric but has a small 1.4 liter charging engine that can continue for nearly 500 KMs without a fuel stop, the charging engine generates electricity and puts it through the battery system similar to the concept of diesel-electric submarines .The GM Cadillac sells in the 70 thousand dollar range, The Tesla all electric about 100 thousand. GM also has the Chevy volt at less than 40,000 dollars, and Nissan Leaf in that price range.

Still thought of as a novelty they are smooth and quiet and have gotten a boost with the raising of freeway speeds to 120 KMs per hour, in BC, as a fast quite ride is likely to go over well when considering a trip.

The car was at the 90 amp AC charger and not the 120 amp DC charger, Tesla, the original mad scientist was in a contention with inventor Thomas Edison over the desirability of direct current over alternating current a hundred some years ago. Thomas Edison also invented the electric chair and showed off its power by electrocuting Elephants at State fairs.

Edison’s true success, like that of his friend Henry Ford, was in his ability to maximize profits through establishment of mass-production systems and intellectual property rights. George Westinghouse and Edison became adversaries because of Edison’s promotion of direct current (DC) for electric power distribution instead of the more easily transmitted alternating current (AC) system promoted by Westinghouse. Unlike DC, AC could be stepped up to very high voltages with transformers, sent over thinner and cheaper wires, and stepped down again at the destination for distribution to users.

In 1887, there were 121 Edison power stations in the United States delivering DC electricity to customers. When the limitations of DC were discussed by the public, Edison launched a propaganda campaign to convince people that AC was far too dangerous to use. The problem with DC was that the power plants could economically deliver DC electricity only to customers within about one and a half miles (about 2.4 km) from the generating station, so that it was suitable only for central business districts. When George Westinghouse suggested using high-voltage AC instead, as it could carry electricity hundreds of miles with marginal loss of power, Edison waged a “War of Currents” to prevent AC from being adopted.

The war against AC led him to become involved in the development and promotion of the electric chair (using AC) as an attempt to portray AC to have greater lethal potential than DC. Edison went on to carry out a brief but intense campaign to ban the use of AC or to limit the allowable voltage for safety purposes. As part of this campaign, Edison’s employees publicly electrocuted stray or unwanted animals to demonstrate the dangers of AC;[65][66] alternating electric currents are slightly more dangerous in that frequencies near 60 Hz have a markedly greater potential for inducing fatal “cardiac fibrillation” than do direct currents.[67] On one of the more notable occasions, in 1903, Edison’s workers electrocuted Topsy the elephant at Luna Park, near Coney Island, after she had killed several men and her owners wanted her put to death.[68] His company filmed the electrocution.

AC replaced DC in most instances of generation and power distribution, enormously extending the range and improving the efficiency of power distribution. Though widespread use of DC ultimately lost favor for distribution, it exists today primarily in long-distance high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Low-voltage DC distribution continued to be used in high-density downtown areas for many years but was eventually replaced by AC low-voltage network distribution in many of them.[69]

DC had the advantage that large battery banks could maintain continuous power through brief interruptions of the electric supply from generators and the transmission system. Utilities such as Commonwealth Edison in Chicago had rotary converters or motor-generator sets, which could change DC to AC and AC to various frequencies in the early to mid-20th century. Utilities supplied rectifiers to convert the low voltage AC to DC for such DC loads as elevators, fans and pumps. There were still 1,600 DC customers in downtown New York City as of 2005, and service was finally discontinued only on November 14, 2007.[69] Most subway systems are still powered by direct current. source wikipedia
