Iran: bridges to ancient silk road.

Ancient and diverse a country that is worth seeing.

Persia 2.0

Iran stands as one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations, possessing a cultural identity that has profoundly shaped the intellectual and spiritual landscape of Western and Central Asia. Its presence is defined by a sophisticated synthesis of ancient Persian heritage and Islamic traditions, expressed most vividly through its legendary literature and architecture. Figures like Rumi and Hafez are not merely historical poets but living influences whose verses on love, mysticism, and philosophy continue to resonate in daily life and global discourse. This cultural reach extends into the visual realm through intricate Persian carpets, ornate tile work, and the “Persian Garden” design—a concept of earthly paradise that has influenced landscape architecture from the Taj Mahal to the gardens of Europe.

Geopolitically and historically, Iran occupies a position of immense significance as a bridge between the East and the West. Situated at the heart of the Silk Road, it has functioned for millennia as a primary conduit for the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between China, India, and the Mediterranean. Beyond its strategic geography and vast energy reserves, Iran’s significance lies in its enduring “soft power”—its language, Farsi, was the prestige language of administration and high culture across much of the Islamic world for centuries.

Today, this legacy persists through a globally acclaimed cinema industry and a resilient intellectual tradition that maintains a complex, influential dialogue with both its imperial past and its modern revolutionary identity.

Merit of Merritt

Its good that it is friday….

Around the world in an MGB. We talked to Peter Buckingham and his co driver Kerith Buckingham in the local Coldwater hotel last night. Their  around the world MGB was parked outside as if to rest from its 2010 23000 KM 17 country trip.  Peter said they had started the trip by shipping the car to Beijing China. Peter had also done a bicycle trip in Mainland China in 1982, making for a good start point for the 2010 trip. The trip included northern Iran and 4 -6 thousand year old ruins in the cradle area of the world. He also shipped his car to Melbourne Australia for that part of his trip and its KM tally.

Peter is now capping it off with a trip across Canada west to east and estimates that before he is completely finished he will tally 40 thousand KM.

We hoped that he would not run into( tongue in cheek) John DesBourgh on his  bike trip for MS east , however a friendly road side interaction would be nice.

Work a day

Little excitment about here today after the US Election but a sence that it means that the agenda continues and work a day style will also continue as well.

A college teacher was talking about high standards of completion of assignments being required by schools.

Some talk of the dynamics of the Republican controlled house on the agenda but no expectation of dysfunction from the US by regular people.

Self checker

The local Thompson Nicola District Library, self checker has been being used for a matter of weeks and is expanded into the general collection from the function of signing out holds. When asked a confirmed source said that there are no plans for signing items in on the machine.

We used the equipment and it works well and it frees library staff to spend more time with people that need more help.

Self checkers are used in some grocery stores but not any in the community of Merritt.

Opinion:

Electronics are every where.  We wonder when the market will have respite from them in some sort of sanctuary. Or free zone. A connected world is certainly a different  world.
