Friday, (Saturday some places)that pesky full moon will be a harvest moon. The event is close to the fall equinox on the 22nd so the angle that it appears in the horizon will be smaller then usual.
The Earth’s axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.4° in relation to the ecliptic, the imaginary plane created by the Earth’s path around the Sun. On any other day of the year, either the southern hemisphere or the Northern Hemisphere tilts a little towards the Sun. But on the two equinoxes, the tilt of the Earth’s axis is perpendicular to the Sun’s ray.
The fullness of the moon will be at 9:05:06 Central European Time, here it will be 12:05:06 PDT, Pacific Daylight Time.
Full moons are often attributed to strange events including a recent study by the University of Tokyo suggesting large earthquakes correspond to large tidal events, these events are driven by gravitational pull on the earth from the moon.

Monday evening saw a lunar halo ( ring around the moon), the effect was noticed just before 9 PM in a clear sky. The moon was not full however a very pronounced double circle including a outer blue was a matter of beauty and wonder.
While stargazing, have you ever noticed a large circular band of light surrounding the moon? If so, you have seen a lunar halo.
A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter). A double halo, sometimes with spokes, may be seen on rare occasions when light reflects off water or ice.
The prism effect of light passing through these six-sided ice crystals separates the light into its various colors, resulting in a halo tinged with very pale rainbow colors with red on the inside and blue on the outside. The phenomenon of a lunar halo is similar to a rainbow produced by sunlight and rain falling between your eye and the sun.
Weather lore says a lunar halo is the precursor of impending unsettled weather, especially during the winter months. This is often proved true, as cirrus and cirrostratus clouds generally precede rain and storm systems.
Lunar halos are, in fact, actually fairly common. So watch the night sky — and keep the umbrella handy. Source the staff at Farmers Almanac. http://farmersalmanac.com/astronomy/2009/08/17/ring-around-the-moon/

The summer has seen a number of super moons this year, accounts that the moon is closer than it has ever been have gotten people to look at the sky when the moon is full. The next one is on September 8th and the one in October should be good as well. A source says that the darker October sky will present a better opportunity for viewing a photos then the ones before when the horizon still has some residual light. The length of the day on September 9th will be 12 hours and 47 minutes. the full moon on October 8th will rise at 10.51, November 8th at 22.23.
Harvest Moon” and “Hunter’s Moon” are traditional terms for the full moons occurring in autumn, in the Northern Hemisphere usually in September and October respectively. The “Harvest Moon” is the full moon closest to autumnal equinox, and the “Hunter’s Moon” is the one following it. The names are recorded from the early 18th century.[17]OED for “Harvest Moon” cites a 1706 reference, and for “Hunter’s Moon” a 1710 edition of The British Apollo , where the term is attributed to “the country people” (The Country People call this the Hunters-Moon.) The names became traditional in American folklore, where they are now often popularly attributed to “the Native Americans“.[18] The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon is a yearly festival in Lafayette, Indiana, held in late September or early October each year since 1968.[19] In 2010, the Harvest moon occurred on the night of equinox itself (some 51⁄2 hours after the point of equinox) for the first time since 1991.[20][21]
All full moons rise around the time of sunset. Because the moon orbits the earth in the same direction the earth is rotating, the moon rises later each day – on average about 50.47 minutes later each day [22] The Harvest Moon and Hunter’s Moon are unique because the time difference between moonrises on successive evenings is much shorter than average. The moon rises approximately 30 minutes later from one night to the next, as seen from about 40 degrees N or S latitude. Thus, there is no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise for several days following the actual date of the full moon.

Editors note: A blue moon is a second moon in a Julian calendar or Gregorian calendar month. ( 1 January in the Julian calendar is 14 January in the Gregorian)
The crescent moon on the bottom of the orb was beautiful to see last night and a source in the first nations community says that is a Hobiyee. She said that the more pronounced the spoon effect of the crescent the better an omen for a good year is.
The word Hobiyee according to the source is a first nation word from a northern area about Kitwanga. Thats the Prince Rupert area of north western British Columbia.
An interpretation of the moon is that it will be agood year, which may be in conflict with the Chinese lunar new year that begins the year of the snake as some see that as not a good year. However some good celebrations are planned by the Niska nation: Say’tKilim-Goot ( one heart, one path, one nation) at Gitwinksihlkw BC, at the TS’oohl memorial center February 22 and 23,2013.
The Niska nation is the first nation group that got a treaty from the Canadian government that includes some self-government and taxation authority some years ago and is being monitored for results.

There is a big full moon in a big cold sky here tonight.A person that works at the Desert Inn says that it is not full and it is a fools moon. On looking closer it does seem to not be completely round with a sliver off the south east quadrant.
There is a full moon every 28 days and at one time Greek city states had a 13 month 28 day calender. the dynamic of upmanship with Julius Caesar and his 31 day month and his nephew Augustus have had there way over time and Easter is different as the calender coördinates the Sunday with the resurrection moon of 33 AD.
We hope you all get at least Woody Allen‘s Due of 15 minutes of fame, and don”t have to pay the price for it as the Caesars did.
