There is a UFC boxing and fitness training offered  at the Lower Nicola band school some evenings.

A source says that a relative takes it up and it is a martial art.

Lower Nicola is a small unincorporated satellite community west of  Merritt BC.

There is a call number:  Vancouver, Pauline 604 355 5960

There are some decent videos on the Swagbucks website for health and fitness including Tai chi. You can earn swag bucks while watching Michelle at Apex fitness, and others. A swagbuck is digital currency about a cent each .

Ducks in a row

On Monday the Victoria day holiday a mother Mallard duck was on Nicola Avenue  ( highway 8) followed by nine new ducklings.  We followed them as they ducked into the Murray GM  lot and then out on Voght but on the sidewalk. After a block and a half they found a large bush in the A and W restaurant lot. The ducklings liked it and they lingered there, this after having a brief  and close inspection by a large Raven. We went for some bread and when we got back a women from Ashcroft said that they had gone north on Merritt avenue. Since that was the direction of the Nicola river and it  was within a block we got the sence that they would make it to a more comfortable and suitable environment.

A source says that they were probably chased from their nest on the river  about 4 blocks west on Nicola avenue by a dog.

editors note: There is an off leash park behind the recycle facility by Voght park and since that area is connected by walking trails along the Coldwater and Nicola River it is best it be used rather than having dogs off leash on the walking trails at this time when duckling and goslings are vulnerable.

Tack

This valley has a tradition in the cattle business and supports a segment of the population that keep the cowboy and wrangler lifestyle. As with other pursuits in the world it generates a following and some industry, in this case a green or friendly to, or close to the earth .

There is a tack shop and saddle maker on the corner of Nicola and Garcia and they take pride in producing quality tack .     Also a school for saddle making under the name of Don Lowen.  They have saddles on the go and it may be worth a look at the ones in progress, the Garcia street side door opens on the shop and I was recently invited in by a worker and saw two  saddles on the go.

Cowboy poets and painters set a tone for that community often celebrated at the Quilchena Hotel on Nicola Lake about 20 minutes from here. They celebrate by reenactments musical gatherings and the opportunity to live their lifestyle in a semi public way. Saddles are a status symbol to those that ply the trade at the local cattle ranches including the famous Douglas Lake Cattle Company.

Many first nations people have also taken up that lifestyle here.
