The presentation is at 7PM NVIT lecture theater, at the top of the hill Belshaw avenue in Merritt.

Working with its member communities, as well as private property owners, the NWSFA undertakes an annual program of stock assessment and fish habitat restoration projects in the Nicola Watershed. NWSFA staff interact with other First Nations and DFO to advocate for the protection and restoration of the Nicola Watershed’s fisheries resources. With information provided by the entire NWSFA fisheries team, Jessica will discuss how the team plays an important role in the management of the salmonids of the Nicola Watershed.

Free parking at the school, no drinks or food in the lecture all, the group says that all are welcome, membership or donation requested.

The local fisheries authority with the first nations are doing a Coho study on returning Salmon on the Coldwater river, I’m Merritt. The study will keep this trap up to December and harvest ships from returning hatchery Cohos, count and release wild fish, then walk the river and survey dead fish expired after spawning.
Rob on the site says that some of the fish he processed are in the 70 centimeter range. Coho are also known as Silver Salmon and don’t have the black lips of Chinook.

The trap will be stored at the authorities warehouse after the study

The weekend saw the return of the salmon to the Nicola River here in Merritt. Numbers of fish were in the river at the junction of the Nicola and Coldwater rivers on the weekend.

A fish trap is upstream from the junction on  the Coldwater River by  Voght park, there is little indication of fish taking to the trap route at this writing.

A thousand tagged salmon

Looking for tagged fish.

On Wednesday a pair of observers of First Nation origin were rowing down the Nicola River in a rubber raft. When challenged by the PR they said “we are looking for Chinook Salmon” .”We tagged a thousand of them last year and they should be here anytime” They run every year, said the person in control of the boat.
Merritt has two small rivers that join in the city. The Coldwater and the Nicola they continue as the Nicola to the Thompson at Spence’s Bridge and then on to the the Fraser and the Pacific ocean. There is a fish hatchery at Spious creek west of Merritt that is open to the public for tours. A serious fish tagging program is undertaken and a cabled intervention point is on the Coldwater River off the Voght park walking trail.
The Coldwater river was visibly seen to be suffering during the drought this summer but on viewing the this morning looks healthy and well due to rains in the Coldwater river valley high into the Coquihalla area to the south. The river is however void of fish at this point from a layman’s perspective and access. Chinnok Salmon are on the UNC red list for endangered species.
According to the local newspaper of record the city has announced plans to purchase three city lots on Charters street (* one is in the Nicola river) for a preserve.the lots are said to have access problems which may make them suitable for the preserve.

Chinook are anadromous fish native to the North Pacific Ocean and the river systems of western North America, ranging from California to Alaska, as well as Asian rivers ranging from northern Japan to the Palyavaam River in the Arctic north-east Siberia. They have been introduced to other parts of the world, including New Zealand and the Great Lakes of North America. A large Chinook is a prized and sought-after catch for a sporting angler. The flesh of the salmon is also highly valued for its dietary nutritional content, which includes high levels of important omega-3 fatty acids. Some populations are endangered, however many are healthy. The Chinook salmon has not been assessed for the UCN Red List.

TGIF Salmon return

Have a great weekend!

The Nicola River this morning has returning salmon in it.The river level its self was noticeably managed this year with what seemed to be higher water levels and silt for some time. However today the returning salmon are quite visible  off of Voght street next to The Rotary Park turn coming into Merritt from the North on highway 5A.

A number of species run in the fall we generally expect Sockeye.

There was a city worker hat brought 8 tables into the old chamber office at 2158 B Voght Street for the polling place for the by-election. The city said it had to spend the same for the by election as for the general,$15000.00 however we think that the small office indicates that the general elections accounting may not have taken in regular city workers costs.
