The Trans Mountain pipeline compony has filed its schedule for work for the next six months. Work has been announced as starting in August from Alberta according to the CBC. The pipeline company it self synopsizes the schedule as:

Trans Mountain has filed a six month outlook summary schedule for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project with the National Energy Board (NEB) outlining construction activities planned for 2018. A copy of the filing can be found here. Work will begin in Alberta in August and the North Thompson region of BC in late September. Additional construction is planned in the Lower Mainland of BC and the work at Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, that has been underway since September 2017, will continue.  Source Trans Mountain.

Now nationalized promises have been made not to increase the amount of oil produced but to make the infrastructure more efficient , safer and pay a better value to the owners. Expanding a market beyond the American is anticipated to bring better profitability.

We hope the press will keep them to the promises they made.

The Trans Mountain project is promising 15,000 jobs and 73 billion in new revenues, with 46 billion of that in taxes to government.

        • British Columbia receives $5.7 billion
        • Alberta receives $19.4 billion
        • The rest of Canada shares $21.6 billion
      • More than $400 million committed to Indigenous groups under mutual benefit and capacity agreements
      • $64.7 million to fund an Indigenous pipeline environment committee to ensure ongoing monitoring of the Project
      • Trans Mountain is facilitating the largest-ever expansion of spill response personnel and equipment on the BC coast, a $150-million, 20-year investment by Western Canada Marine Response Corporation that doubles response capacity and cuts mandated response times by half in South Coast waters. Equal Opportunity

The Trans Mountain Pipeline people have a equal opportunity policy to hiring:

Worley Parsons Cord (WPC) is the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contractor for the Edmonton Terminal and 12 pump stations included in the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. Their work includes addition of four new storage tanks at Edmonton Terminal, 11 new pump stations along the route in British Columbia and Alberta and one new pipeline on the existing pipeline.

What’s your process for hiring the construction crews and related workers who will be building the Trans Mountain Expansion Project?

WorleyParsonsCord is an equal opportunity employer. Our process includes a very strong local and Aboriginal hiring focus for multiple reasons, including commercial returns to the communities engaged in the project, reduced travel risks by using workers and subcontractors living close to our construction sites, and creating a sense of pride among the respective work forces which results in improved quality. We have dedicated human resource staff that research local and Aboriginal labour sources and identify skilled workers who can bring value to our project delivery source: Trans Mountain.

The expansion of the existing line to Burnaby was approved by the NEB, the detailed route is under review( Chapter Four) by the NEB at this time. detailed route.

TGiF- detailed hearings

The Trans mountain expansion is starting hearings on property ownership effected by the twinning project from Edmonton on November 20th 2017.
The Hearings will be held in Alberta ” Detailed Route Hearings” and are run by the National Energy Board.
The starting point for the expansion is the Trans Mountain yard in Sherwood Park AB.

The National Energy Board will begin Detailed Route Hearings to determine whether we have proposed the best possible detailed route for the pipeline and the most appropriate methods and timing for building the pipeline. These hearings will provide an opportunity for landowners and those potentially affected by the Project to share their concerns about the proposed detailed route.

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Assc. has been working to see better conditions for pipeline activities. The self governing body has as a member the Trans Mountain pipeline group and they have reported on successful lobbying to provide   assurance to concerned people that delivery of  oil from Alberta is well regulated and safe.Yesterday the CBC reported that BC is satisfied with the environmental  provisions of the approved expansion.

The international pipeline conference.

Pipeline professionals, engineers and scientists gathered to talk about leadership and innovation and to share insights into the future of the industry. Among other things, we saw that the importance of communication and sustainability is a key focus for our industry.

Inspector  certification

CEPA has been working with the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) and the INGAA Foundation, to develop a pipeline inspector certification program. The program will give a consistent framework for inspector training programs across North America.  Source: Trans Mountain Pipeline.

The CEPA has also been involved in local fire chief certification and  the using their members mandate  to get legislation that makes polluter pay the law on right of way properties along pipelines.

Its been four and a half decades since we first saw locals here in the interior of BC take up jobs exploring for tar sands in northern Alberta some of them have passed on after spending a good part of their life in the exploration and development of a resource for future generations. Companies like Tonto Drilling and Connors Drilling, and the engineering supervision that gave that first drive for a better life have been absorbed and fractured into a different lifestyle today.

Wages for a stand up citizenry were more the focus then . A global corporate structure demands more today. It  is still desirable that a big share go to the individuals that command a wage  reflecting the status of working people who will live here and contribute time and talent to the future  of the community.

TGIF-politics as usual

Editorial Opinion:

Pipeline politics are in the news again, after a visit from the Chinese there is talk of the Northern Gateway project again about parliament. With Vancouver’s opposition to medium size tankers increasing traffic in their neighbourhood it seems a shift is occurring in the flow of activity. Foreign owner ship of expensive properties  subject to a new tax have dropped off .06 % and pressure has moved to Toronto.

We hold that it is in the national interest that one pipeline should be built, that’s the twining of the trans mountain line to Burnaby tankers and all. In fairness to foreign nations and their investments in the Petro industry and the  dynamic we have in law here for private property rights we need to show sovereignty before we don’t have the skills to do a project of that scope and will need development help to do it.

This is the national interest not coast to coast but by pipe but control of our resources and the ability to manage them as a country. PP

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion approved in May/2016 had conditions, one was ongoing consultations .
The expansion will increase tanker traffic from Vancouver, something unattractive to many and in particular First Nations. Because the expansion is considered by the regulator as in the public interest, consideration must have been given to what this will cost us. Including ascetics and life style. The shirt and caricature above was made for a canoe trip by First Nations people up the coast of BC, and shows an attitude that we understand and appreciate.

Large tankers can only be really be appreciated by sailors,  double hulls by engineers,  natural beauty by most and the coast of BC best by the indigenous residents. This will cost us as paying for any necessity does. A consuming humanity awaits and a vigilance demands a balance and respect for the costs and commitment of watchers and attitude molders.

Kiosk for education

There is a kiosk at a sensitive grasslands area here in Merritt. It is dedicated to a local, Laurie Guichion , a rancher and the former chair of the Nicola Valley Community Round table. Laurie lost his life in a motorcycle accident years ago, however his legacy remains as the grasslands he loved is somewhat guarded by the awareness to the sensitive area. The published information isat the kiosk at the entrance of the Lundbom Lake grasslands area at he top of Hamilton Hill leaving Merritt on the connector east of town.
The Trans Mountain Pipeline company owned by Kinder Morgan is reporting that another such facility is installed through a contribution to a Kamloops social action group.

The project was completed on a sunny day in early October. Constructed off-site, the structure transported to the Lac Du Bois Grasslands in two parts. KBRA volunteers worked to prepare the site by digging two holes to hold the kiosk posts. Once on-site, the kiosk frame was pieced together, placed in the holes and reinforced with concrete footings. After placing a roof on the structure, the map panel was incorporated.

The Kamloops Bike Riders Association has placed it at the head of its Lac Du Bois trail.
It is said to give awareness of the combined value of recreation and grasslands sensitivity and the ability to co exist.
Trans mountain is nearing the end of a process to get permission to twin its 60 year old line to Edmonton that passes north east of Merritt’s airstrip.

Editors note: Trans Mountain has operated here for 60 years without any serious trouble we think that the twinning will bring scrutiny to the aging infrastructure here producing a net security benefit.
