Help for those passing from this life

May is Palitive care month , we have an organisation here called the Merritt and District Hospice Society. A registered organization with an office open 9 am till noon Tuesdays. The office is located at 12″ 2025 Granite Avenue with a phone for the co-ordinator : 250-280-4040, mail 3451 Voght ,Street,Merritt V1K1C6.A table with helpful literature is set out in the public library today and from time to time. As a part of the month they are asking for volunteers, training in May. Call District office at 250-280-4040.

Volley Fest Banquet

April 27th sees a volley fest banquet at the local civic center downtown on Mamette avenue. Last year volley ball players  tournament here and the awards banquet saw a great display of costumes and team dynamics fun-filled in a fun and energizing form.

The ladies tournament is April 26 and 27th in Merritt and an expected high demand is capping involvement. the local association has a website that includes a photo gallery here:

Teen center

There is a renovation going on at the former office of the local mural project that saw murals of country singer put on many buildings about town by famed muralist Michelle Loughry.
A source says that Ask wellness is moving into the building they now have their office the BC government 55+ disabled housing project.
A renovator says it may be a teen drop in as fridge and stove is going in.
The building once part of the Armstrong Department store belonging to a principle in the incorporation of Merritt as a city in 1911. The store proper is now the home of The Country Music Hall of Fame and is across the alley from the building that is being renovated.It was once  the stores warehouse.
Spirit Square, a legacy project for the last winter Olympics is attached as well. Voght Street and Granite avenue across from the Post Office in downtown Merritt.

Tomorrow night at 7PM, April 23rd, at the local community college NVIT a film on the representation of women in the media will be presented. In the auditorium at 4155 Belshaw avenue Misrepresentation will be played.
doors open at 6:30 seating is limited to 145 and no food or drinks in the theater: admission 2 dollars ( proceeds to the local women’s shelter.)

Two laptops

The local library in Merritt has two laptops to use in the study carousels at the Garcia street facility. The laptops are two of ten that were dispersed from a program called literacy Merritt.

The librarian said it was a program to help seniors stay in contact with grand children that may be living elsewhere.

The lap tops are available for use without log in or a library card, the library has wi-fi service.

Drumming and drum making

About a dozen people were in a traditional drum making class at room 069 today ant NVIT the first nations administrated public , community college at 4155 Belshaw Avenue here in Merritt , starting with a bannock lunch the process takes about 2 hours to stretch raw hide over wooden rings. Deer skin is also used to make rattles of raw hide to go with drummers.

A drum stick is also made from a willow stick , ” medicine” ” willow has healing ” and a sowed skin covered foam pad. A participant said also that sand was used  before balloons were available to stitch wet rawhide over for  the rattle.

When asked Amy Strayer said it was her first one and tradition holds that she give it away. Her drum was drying and she had not yet decided who to give it to.

First nations people often sing ad drum their introductions to a meeting.

Spade foot

The local naturalists are having a presentation on the Spade foot on the 18th of April.

The northern limit of the great basin Spadefoot is the subject of the evening.

The naturalists also enjoy a presentation of members wildlife pictures before the main presentation as well.  Gerry Sanford and freelance published author Murphy Shewchuck are some of the members that regularly share unique captures at the pre presentation.

The event begins at 7:00 at the local community college lecture theater NVIT, 4155 Belshaw Avenue in Merritt.

Frost

This morning there was heavy frost on the ground, after snow on the weekend  that did not stick.

Crocus , tulips and daffodils are seen in yards that have sheltered  areas and warmth of soil conditions.

A consultation with Henry a participant at the farmers market and a serious friend of the with in a hundred miles thought said that he planted 80 odd romaine lettuce in side this week in anticipation of planting outside. He said they are frost hardy and lots of green vegetables are, common wisdom for less frost hardy plants is the end of May. Henry intends to have produce at the farmers market when it opens May 18th.

Public access

The local library is on Garcia street in Merritt it has 8 public access PC type computers. The public can log in for an hour a day with their library card and for visitors out of the area a 1 hr pass code is available at the front desk.

The  library was built in the early 1990s and a big part of the plan was the acceptance of the computers from the Bill and Melinda
Gates foundation. although they have been updated by the regional district since the original gifting it is good to acknowledge those that give back to the community in this way.

From the 8000 people of Merritt and 10,000 more in the trading area ,thanks to goodness and the Gates bunch.
