Leap year

This month is a leap year 29 days in it. There are 5 Tuesdays in it as was last month. The julian calendar that we use is politicized and Julius Caesar has his 31 day month as did his nephew Augustus: July and August . there is a full moon every 28 days and some calendars in antiquity had 13 -28 day months.

My niece has her 8th birthday on the 29th makin her 32 in dog years.  And according to Woody Allen ( he got his)every one gets their 15 minutes of fame including Caesar and those born on the 29th of February.

Today in history

The world goes on and fortunately it is learning from its past and more people are educated. Less strife and more peace is rolling out and this is in part as the expectation of people is for peace and not trouble.

The past is pot marked with lots of things to be bitter about and it serves only to make the injury worse. When push comes to shove you must go on and be civil about it. To make things better start with your  neighbour and end with your friends. However you do it leave the world better than you found it.

Saturday night here in Merritt was a windy one, as shown by copper plates missing from the dome of the historic Coldwater Hotel. The AW also had some signage in the Nicola River on Sunday AM.

Wind speed is measured in kilopascal and they make a difference to local building codes as well as insurance policies.

A station is at Kelowna ,its been operating since 1953, A-1123970 at 49.95 degrees north by 119.38 east at 430 meters.

Editors note:Enviroment Canada put a station here last year on a site that came available by a new water well for the city on land purchased from a ranch of Nicola Avenue. the well was part of the BC Canada infrastructure program.

 Opinion:

November 22, 2005

My good nature and my sense of self I owe to the authoritative parenting I received in my formation to adulthood. My success as adult I attribute to the fortunate turns of events that allowed for the liberty to live under authoritative nurture.

The nurture I received came from my parents; I was not belittled or treated as immature. Autonomy was given through adaptive control techniques with high acceptance and involvement. Firm and reasonable expectations from parents, school, army cadets, and the community at large worked together to produce a sense of adventure, and reasonable risk taking with the appropriate autonomy. This I attribute in part, to a general disposition of desire for a better life, for our generation after the Second World War. The competence created in myself gave me the ability to excel moderately in many societal positions.

I am truly grateful that the authoritarian approach with its coercion and low acceptance was not my experience while growing up. This I believe could have made me into a critical and unhappy person, gaining self esteem through the misfortune of those about me. Putting people down to add to my own success, would I think, have produced a person unattractive to myself, giving me low self esteem, with possible aggressiveness? Force and punishment are the stuff of poor relationships, something I do not regard as the best lifestyle to have.

Overly permissive nurture fortunately was not my lot. I enjoyed the firm and fair structure of a reasonable home, school, and four years of army cadets, where I excelled. Those in my experience did not lack the confidence to be involved in my life directly or peripherally. My decisions, while early in chronological time, fit my emotional and intellectual maturity. This produced early success in work, family, and social life. Impulsiveness and rebellion have not been my experience. This gives me a peace that is attractive to those socially involved with me. I have many friends that enjoy a relationship with me, one that’s secure, stable, and sincere.

Some of my acquaintances had formative experiences where their lot was of being uninvolved with parents and overseers. The uninvolved style was sometimes in part due to single parenthood, the disruptiveness this style caused hindered their cognitive development. One even went to jail, as his emotional makeup and his social skills prevented him from making the right responses at the right time. I am exceedingly glad this was not part of my experience or that of any legacy to my children’s children.

A professor of mine gave an example of an authoritative parent trying to show a miscreant child how to have empathy for a marked up wall. She did this by personalizing the wall, giving it feelings. This fits my experience with authoritative nurturing as it leaves room for the child’s autonomy. When the child’s empathy causes her to take responsibility for her actions it does so without the unreasoning obedience of the authoritarian nurturer, the looseness and second guessing of permissive nurture, or the overstepping of age and emotional maturity resulting from an uninvolved nurture relationship.

To conclude, whether it’s a marked up wall, serious rebellion, or dysfunction the best form to nurture is the authoritative style. This gives both the nurturer and the nurtured a secure platform to be autonomous and live in a community where understanding of self and others are critical for success. People that model the attributes of authoritative nurture and the confidence, with autonomy, that they bring should be highly valued in society; valued, extolled, and emulated. They know how to be successful; their competence and confidence can and should be transferred to others.

Opinion:

This is a recent thing in jurisprudence but has been about in human activity for a long time. Deceit in war and peace is the sometimes essence of engagement amongst rivals and those that can’t compete at a legitimate level.

Along with bad faith the world has often been at odds with each other over misstatement of fact and the actions that come out of it.

People need to be trusting to be human and its a miserable thing to have to live in distrust.

There is a good book out at the Country bugs book store it sells for just under 50 dollars and it chronicles the time of Vancouver in a pictorial commentary. The City of Vancouver is century and a quarter old and is a dynamic beautiful city in a surreal setting of harbour and snow-capped ski mountains.

The book is by Chuck Davis and is called the Chuck Davis history of Metroplolitain Vancouver

Furnace upkeep

Spoke to a person at Nicola Plumbing, a long time second generation family business here in Merritt. He recommends to have your furnace serviced at least every two years to prevent a cold house from a failure. Filters, cleaning, thermal coupler and gas leak scan is all included. sometimes a carbon monoxide test in the house is appropriate.

Every year is optimal and the biggest thing is the check for issues. A froze up house is a terrible event and it takes a lot to fix something that can be prevented. Fall or early spring is the time to do it as the construction season is somewhat wound down.

Natural gas furnaces are very efficient for gas usage these days and are compact , especially when equipped with a heat exchanger.

Things can escalate when failure happens in cold weather.

OPINION:

We have a person here  working from Nepal, we much appreciate his perspective coming from a country that has recently become a republic. He spoke recently about world empires and we know how much trouble colonial and empire building have been to humanity in the past.  We regard his experience as valid and useful in understanding the drives of people and how sometimes unrealistic ambition has damaged to the whole.

The gentleman works here for the forests at government and was recently at a toastmaster meeting as a guest. We remember that the international agenda of organizations put in place after the Second War were to” make the world safe for small nations” We Canadians are grateful for our place in the world and our significance that has matured under that mandate and we wish Nepal the same in their self-determining future.
