Wednesday the film shark water is being shown at the NVIT lecture theater in Merritt. Speakers for the film at the last Naturalist Society meeting say that it is from an ecology point of view and it has conservation as an objective.There was also a mild warning of some slight gore. The film starts at 7:00.

The tickets are on sale at Brambles Bakery and they let on as if it is an altruistic endeavor as the  4 dollars a ticket goes to help sharks conservation.

About  a quarter of a million people attend the anti-cuts protest in London

The plants are being put into the new beds on the Garcia street upgrade here in Merritt. There are some hardy roses and grasses including Blue Fescue and Day lilies. There is lavender and large landscape rocks. the benches do not face the street but are turned to face the side walk which is wider on the upgrade streets. The workers were not having trouble taking  the plants out of the pots as they still had ice in them from winter.

Some civic pride is demonstrated by the attractive upgrade.

The BC Hydro crew was at the coffee shop this AM and I asked if any more trouble was coming from an incident of a horse eating on one of their new power poles. Early in the winter this year they had a call about one doing that in the Mamette Lake area.

The worker said no and another worker said  who was not familiar replied copper and arsenic solution would probably kill it.   The new hydro poles are pressure treated  with those in a solution;and the poles look green , something probably inviting to a horse in the winter.

They said without qualification that none had been a problem since.

There are wild horses in this area as well and lots up at the highland valley copper mine , the mine feeds them sometimes in the winter. Old timers talk about three distinct herds and a star weekly magazine article about 45 years ago featured the wild horses of the Canford area west of Merritt about 22 kilometers.

There is no indication that the pole eating horse was wild.

Tonight the Nicola Naturalists have invited the local bylaw officer to speak.  Bob Davis was an instructor at the local college in another life and now operates an organic garden on his property on highway 8 to Spence’s Bridge.

Bob has also been an auxiliary police officer and a official for taking tests for firearms licences.

Bob will be speaking on mosquitoes and he has some experience in the West Nile virus concern of a few years ago. His presentation is entitled “What we don”t know about Mosquitoes.”

Update the presentation was in the comfort of the lecture theater and bob Davies presented his work as a biologist , mapping degree days for mosquito incubation in Canada. He also documented West Nile cases in a timeline apologised some to warmer weather. He subjectively suggested that West Nile is not a problem  on a large scales most  the greater percentage of people who get this type of encephalitis will have no symptoms and humans are a dead-end and cannot communicate the virus. Some deaths will occur for people disposed to it.

Bobs presentation was upbeat and informative al lot of information given and not all may have been heard in the sence of appreciation as he said that ht British Columbia government was stockpiling a know carcinogen for dealing with the WNV threat, he also said they had regulated away the consent need to apply it.

2012 has seen the end of funding for this research here, it remains to be seen were BoB will publish his works or if his funders have the copy right. He commented that he is indispensable to the research.

Bob Davis was announced as a biologist with 25 years experience and still has tenure At NVIT. Bob is a fisheries biologist by his admission.

The first V2 rocket test is a failure with an explosion on lift off.

There was an artisan type fellow with a trailer behind pick up with four square bales of hay yesterday. He was parked on Voght coming away from the window of a do it your self realty assist. He said he was from the lower mainland and he paid $150.00 a ton for it .The four bales came to 4 tons a 600 dollar buy. He was happy with it and said it was cheap. He had purchased it from a local ranch to the north-east of town. The hay was for horses that he raised for raising at Cloverdale.

The city is delivering  new serial numbered garbage cans about town to-day. they belong to the city but you are to put your address on them and keep them up. Also record the serial number in case of problems.

A bigger can is coming next year for clean recycle all in one truck and automated loading. A source at the city says that They had in mind the comfort of the handlers and WCB liability when choosing the system.
