The union of British Columbia municipalities is the organization between the government and municipalities in British Columbia. They say they are excited about having a convention this year. After an all-digital one in 2020 this year’s convention is about optimism and how problems can be presented as an opportunity rather than a problem.

The forum for local government.

Your representatives at the municipal level are able to bring resolutions to the floor of the ubcm so it is also your opportunity to approach your local officials about the possibility of activity on or off the floor at the convention. A resolution passed could eventually make it through to provincial legislation. The effect of being grassroots democracy.

Good good luck to all those who take the time and give their ideas for this public good. Don’t worry about giving up your idea it just makes room for another one. Thoughtful public interest we’ll see the theme to be realized and that public good will come back to you in a tangible way.

Anticipating speakers and networking through a quality virtual convention..

Information on registration will be found at ubcm.ca after July 5th.

Editors note.

The time tested and published Roberts Rules requiring presence at quorum and voting is still our best practice view. Giving every one opportunity to vote is very important as well. Remote or absent should be handled with extreme care. PP

Sample attitude of public health officials across Atlantic Canada.

The road ahead is now clear but there are no shortcuts if you want to see New Brunswick reach that green level as quickly as possible please go out and get yourself vaccinated and encourage your family and friends to do the same thank you very much good afternoon .It is important that we don’t lose sight of our objective we know that there’s been some differences and and how we’re rolling out and moving forward in the end and of getting beyond covid we also know that we’re all very tired of this and no one’s any more tired of of than I am but this isn’t a time to lose control or lose patience or cause disruptions to friend and neighbors this is a time that we exercise restraint we keep moving in a direction that’s getting us back to life as normal and we do so in our respective areas that are providing the best health care needs and opportunities we are on the cusp here of getting back to green (normal) and will work through the issues within Atlantic region and I’m confident that we will be able to do so I’m going to be meeting with my with my colleagues our view hasn’t changed we are very comfortable with the recommendations of public health we’re very comfortable with the capabilities in our respective provinces the border between Atlanta provinces and we will make all of this work. It was a path to Green.

There are some very precise requirements to meet in order to go to the next phase it’s take it took a phase approach of easing the covid-19 restrictions it’s based on recommendations of public health and it was approved by the Covington committee

Art and stuff, hello Hollywood…

Golden age of Hollywood

The Nicola Valley Community Arts Council has Judy Young at their gallery , corner of Nicola and Voght in Merritt BC. The Show will go on until June 17th at regular gallery hours.

Her show includes a black and white pencil pastel of screen actress Marlene Dietrich. One of Judy’s favorite classical actors. Marlene was a driven force in eight decades of screen. Playing with greats like Spencer Tracy and Jimmie Stewart, Marlene had a big input to what was called the Golden age of Hollywood. The painting ” one of my babies” according to Judy has a powerful effect in the demonstration of the show.

Classical movie buff come and see.

Judies show is a mixed image show about her interests and includes besides Dietrich’s some from Vancouver streets in the 50’s and old rural barns from the Nicola and much more.

Road safety 2025 …

Working group being sot

The BC government is looking for a working group to deal with road safety issues around deaths and serious injury. The crown insurer went to a no fault system with a promise for more ” care” for injuries to go with a promised 20 percent rate drop from May 1st 2021.

On May 21, the provincial government launched BC Road Safety Strategy 2025: A Collaborative Framework for Road Safety. Guided by the Road Safety Strategy Steering Committee, of which UBCM is a member, this revitalized strategy provides a clear vision of provincial road safety to 2025.

BC Road Safety Strategy 2025 is based on three pillars and is rooted in the vision of realizing zero fatalities and serious injuries on BC roads. The three pillars are:

  • Working Together for The Future of Road Safety;
  • Tools to Make Our Roads Safer; and,
  • Inspiring British Columbians To Make Safe Road Choices.

The framework outlines the tools, initiatives, awareness campaigns and enforcement programs that are creating a road safety network in BC. It recognizes that road safety is a shared responsibility, and supports a vision for working together to reduce fatalities and serious injuries.

In alignment with Canada’s commitment to and BC’s adoption of the 2020 Stockholm Declaration, the Strategy seeks for a 50% reduction in road-related deaths and injuries by 2030.

In addition to the full Strategy, the Province has released an “at-a-glance” summary outlining key objectives and targets

History 2014 working group.

The working groups are intended to assist a 14 member Executive Committee established to implement the Provincial BC Road Safety Strategy.  The British Columbia Road Safety Strategy was developed to align with Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015.  The strategy is intended to be a collaborative process and provide a framework for mobilizing all stakeholders in improving road safety and in raising public awareness and commitment to road safety.  The overall goal of the strategy is to make British Columbia roads the safest in North America and to work toward the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

If you are interested in working on one of these committees please identify the committee you are interested in and contact Ken Vance at kvance@ubcm.ca by March 26, 2014.

Information about the strategy is available on the OSMV website.

2014 fatalities in BC

There were 289 deaths on BC roads in 2014 going up to 295 in 2015,then dropping to 281 and 282 in 2016 and 17. Speeding remained the number one causation in deaths with 133 in 2009 coming down to create a 10 year average of 93 at the end of 2018. ( police reported)

There is a push toward transit as always however non PMC transportation is a global climate change issue that sounds off in decisions on much to drive. ( Will that make less experienced drivers?)
