yes try as you might…..

The Nicola Naturalists had a presentation on invasive species last night. About 60 members and interested listened Steve Maricle to facts including 55 species that have invaded territory and ecology  that is not their own in Canada. This includes 6 species of fish in BC, Large mouth bass, small mouth bass,Yellow Perch,Pumpkinspotted, and Goldfish. These fish are transported to lakes and waterways not their own and often have an advantage over the indigenous species.

The speaker said in 1999 they tried offering a 5000 dollar reward to report transportation of these fish and had no response but got a value out of the raising of the profile that the reward engendered.

Consumer knowledge

We talked to a young man this week who was driving a 16 passenger Van. When asked why not an electric or hybrid he said he researched it and the cost of the battery replacement was prohibitive. We said 5 years and the battery at 2 figures would need to be replaced.

When we talked to a person driving a pick-up that was electric with a 1.6 liter charging motor the fellow said 12 years , the former fellow admitted that 5 years was low-end when asked to comment on that. When asked if there was a residual value to used batteries he was not able to comment.

A charging station is in Merritt and has yet to be seen being used other then by official electric vehicles , the announcement of Tim Hortons and free retail outlets is not a subject on the minds of people here today.

The lady

About a hundred people of this small south central interior British Columbia community watched The Lady last evening at the local college lecture theater. A powerful storytelling of the the fight for democracy in Burma, the film seemed to hush the people as they left the building.”That was a good film” was one of the comments, I saw that 2 years ago at the coast another. However an overall mood of some reverence was very clear.

Red scarfed soldiers selected and given licence to arbitrary kill seemed to be one of the key elements in a muting of  unsolicited opinion. The fact that the Military allowed a free election May 1 and only won 10 seats of the 400 some also raised a sence of wonder about delusion and arrogance of unrestrained power.

The president of the group was heard to say that the film was attended by 87 members. Ron Brown was in the group, he was an election official here and supported mandatory voting. The group according to the president all voted in the tear off people’s choice with a unanimous excellent.

Gas prices

The shell station at the top of the hill on Voght street is showing a gasoline price of a dollar and 21.9 cents a liter that s up 10 cents from a week ago down town. An employee from the neighbouring Petro Canada in an interview said she was walking over to check the price of the competitor. implying  that was her directed job.

The summer driving season usually sees a spike in retail gas prices. These increases are a little early for the May trough September demand period.

Hobiyee

The crescent moon on the bottom of the orb was beautiful to see last night and a source in the first nations community says that is a Hobiyee. She said that the more pronounced the spoon effect of the crescent the better an omen for a good year is.

The word Hobiyee according to the source is a first nation word from a northern area about Kitwanga. Thats the Prince Rupert area of north western British Columbia.

An interpretation of the moon is that it will be agood year, which may be in conflict with the Chinese lunar new year  that begins the year of the snake as some see that as not a good year. However some good celebrations are planned by the Niska nation:  Say’tKilim-Goot ( one heart, one path, one nation) at Gitwinksihlkw BC, at the TS’oohl memorial center February 22 and 23,2013.

The Niska nation is the first nation group that got a treaty from the Canadian government that includes some self-government and taxation authority some years ago and is being monitored for results.

Some might ask isn”t that freedom of expression, isn’t that fair comment?

We say that glass is a reasonable restraint on freedom of expression and that the perpetrators should take up letters to the Editors.
