New store. Warehouseone

On Granite Avenue a vacant store is now occupied and doing business. Almost over night and it would seem to be had coördinated with the upgrade of sidewalks and beatification of the 2000 block at on Granite and Garcia. A wholesale retail supplier of discount blue jeans is running cash registers and moving stock brought in with plastic cargo tubs .   There are about four employees  at work and a business card available from a supervisor.

Maud Soderholm is the regional manager for the store and was on hand yesterday in the store.

Warehouseone has a number of outlets across Canada and their presence here is sudden and hardly announced to the benefit of the consumer, in Merritt.

The building was the former site of 2 Sands stores one before and one after reorganization several years ago. It was last used to sell motorcycle fashion wear during the Great Canadian Bike Rally last summer. That event lasted  a few days.

Winter coming

There was 2 degrees of frost last night resulting in a flurry of activity with compressors and people blowing out underground sprinklers today. The City today was blowing the lines about the pool a considerable amount of underground sprinkling is about this small city as we enjoy a lot of green space.

People with underground systems get a better time block for sprinkling as the thought is they are planned  as well as more available in off peak hours.

Construction

The streets in Merritt are full of activity today as at least two major projects for this small community are at work. Sanders and Company are busting up the pavement and concrete at the old Grasslands Hotel site as well.

A sewer and water upgrade and a beautification in the small downtown core are in progress.

The local legion is also readying its front for a country music  possibly Merle Haggard according to an unconfirmed source. The about 10 x 10 black white and gray-scale portraits are done by the muralist Michelle Loughery and the Walk of Stars.

A source who is a contractor to control knapweed says that Killex is a mild herbicide  and the 5 star rating given to it by Canadian tire consumers is partly because of it. The source a licensed pesticide contractor through the ministry of environment and says  that people that get high marks on their exam package for the local access center can have a 5 year licence. and that grandfathering is out..

He said that the big concern is herbicide pesticide use coming up for GM crops.

We think that PCP rating numbers should be a concern to consumers and heeded.

The club is on City property.

A lot of volunteer labor went into the club and some buildings were acquired from the old Craigmont Mines operation. Some of the mine employees and managers were good steady members of the operation.

Bridge inspection

A source says that the  authorities at the Provincial highways system are inspecting for serviceability on the existing highway bridges in the region. The number one issue is an old highway 8 bridge that connects Merritt and Spence’s Bridge. There is another safe bridge with in a short distance of  the old number 8 highway bridge. The one in question  is limited to one lane and 5 ton traffic.  However it is a convenience to those in the small declining town and connects its business district to Merritt or canyon traffic via highway 8.

Opinion:

We think that a new bridge is a good option and that it will keep that potential alive as well as give more options coming out of the heavy population area of the coast in the event of  disasters such as fires or earthquakes.

RCMP

There are negotiations on here for the renewal of a contract with the province to supply municipal police services from the Federal Police Force.
The press is reporting that a take it or leave it offer is on the table from the feds for March 2012 renewal. The feds are also tendering 30 plus billion in navy ship building contracts and a proposal is in their hands for work to be done in BC shipyards by an eastern shipbuilder.

The BC Provincial Police force was used even up past the end of the second world war in BC and this renewal for the RCMP comes after the completion of a 20 year contract with the province for its 6000 members that the feds supply to municipalities here.

Two police officers were murdered in this community in the 1930s a BC Provincial Police officer and a Dominion Police Services of Canada officer , their killers, surname George, were hung at the New Westminster penitentiary for the killings.

The second war era RCMP were responsible for national security today that task is done by a civilian agency the called CSIS….
