The Dali Lama unveils the international tribute to human rights in Canada.
The peg leg production film Clean Bin played last night here in Merritt about 60 people watched and then asked questions of the stars. The Contractor working for the regional district had a box to recycle batteries and cell phones as well. The film was admission by donation. and the question arose why it was poorly attended the producer said that there was a disconnect with the CBC at this showing and said that their preference is two showings per community.
Some powerful imagery was presented in the film including albatross chicks from Midway Island in the pacific apparently dead with plastic waste in their stomachs.
The issue of the Cache Creek land fill came up in the film and on the phone witha regional district offical said that that was not his mandate however lasndfill costs run about 100 dollars a ton. And to presnt alternatives was a concern of the District.
Our view is that the films attempt to show a concern for reuse and recycle gave a good sence of a relief of the social pressure that sometimes keeps people using and consuming new products and plastic wrapping.
Live smart and make some choices against extra packaging and you will please the producers of this film.

National Forest Week was last week and I attended one function that of the film night hosted by Jerry Canuel. The 2 films last Thursday evening were A working Forest: its future with fire and wildlife 64 minutes. The film was moderated by Chuck Leavell the legendary Rolling Stones rock artist . The film shows family owned woodlands in American Society. The second film was Goodwood: 44 minutes a view of a Honduras livelihood coming from making chairs out of select trees and not from marginal agriculture . Both films were viewpoint well away from the Canadian system of forest resource development.
The film gave a perspective of what other world experience is and how some things compare such as value added and management by fire. Both items have some place in the dynamic of the peripheral forestry efforts here. Jerry Canuel the host of the film night works for mainstream mills and said there method is clear cutting .

The most pleasant autumn rain made the dust behave this early morning. We have the best of the best here in this area. The leaves are just starting to turn in town with yellows as there was a heavy dew 3 days ago. The pleasant weather is a lack of traumatic weather such as hurricanes and such makes a place that we rightfully take for granted. One slight earthquake in my living memory was not felt and was deep in the earth giving those that watch those events thee only clue to the quake.

Public works; the city is doing a water and sewer line replacement on Chapman Street north of Nicola by the Civic Center, and going right on first avenue to Voght. There is also according to a source two alleys getting sewer lines because the service from old subdivided lots goes through the alleys. Meaning that they can’t get the home owners to pay for their part going to lines put in the street.

It has a well equipped work out room and is well maintained . Pretty good for a small community of Merritt . It is a public facility in the City proper but has funding from the Regional district as is the library here in town.

Catherine Shewchuck the spouse of freelance author Murphy Shewchuck , said that she had recently returned from a sea trip through the North West Passage. “no ice”‘ and she was not ordering a drink. August is a month that has the least amount of sea ice and we are not surprised at the passing. Her tone and demeanor communicated an easy passing different from the second war passage of the St Rock and its 5 RCMP members that got through. A member of a service club that I was involved with had a father who was one of the police officers on that voyage and told of hardship and the perseverance employed by the crew of the St Rock.
Catherine is a member of the Nicola Naturalist Society who’s president is Alan Burger a University of Victoria Alumni and a person keen on the global warming perspective. A responsible perspective and one we hold credible; we have another witness now of its effect. And hardship on some fauna .
We enjoy the longer growing season and think that the Arctic in its present state is a good opportunity to document and explore and think it should be enjoyed now as long as the window stays open. Watching the adapting process is a useful and dynamic thing. Musk Ox farms in Alaska?
