The solar eclipse saw the opportunity for many different photo or optical testing. We set up a screen in the parking lot of the local arena and got camera obscura  pictures of the solar eclipse. As well as unfiltered photos of images in the sky ahead of the moon and clouds. The next eclipse is in south America in 2019, 2024 in eastern Canada, 2044 on the west coast  here.

A lot has been made of the fact that the moon is just the right size and at just the right distance from the sun to completely shadow  and block the sun out in a full solar eclipse. This rare even will be taking place again on August 21st. Vancouver start time is 9:10 AM ,ending at 11:37 AM giving about 90 percent eclipse.

The eclipse will be seen from North America however there is only a strip from the west coast of Salem Oregon to Charleston South Carolina  on the east coast of the US where complete blackout will be seen. Nasa

Never look directly at the sun serious damage can occur to eyes. A pin hole in a piece of card board into a viewing cardboard box is the safest method, or wait for the TV broadcast.

NASA will cover the eclipse coast to coast starting at noon EDT

There will be others and the skies here cooperated for the event although it was maximum eclipse when we saw it here 7:47 PM.

Al Horne

Al Horne is presenting the last of 3 lectures at the Merritt Public library tonight 6-8 PM. Al presents on Alexander the Great and the conquest of the Persian Empire.The Macedonians united Greece except for Sparta into nation   to drive the  Persian threat out of the world and give western culture peace and security.  The peace lasted 40 years after Alexanders death before breaking up his empire into smaller ruling sections.

Al Horne is a retired history teacher with first hand travelers knowledge of the locations of the significant events in Greece’s world conquest.

Garden art

The weekend saw the Communities in Bloom committee and the Baillie House had a succesful art  in the garden and community artisan works showing in Merritt. The Nicola Valley Heritage Society , The Baillie House ,recorded 350 visitors on Saturday in their part of the event.

The weather was exceptional mid twenty celsius with calm and clear sky’s. The Baillie House reported selling out of hard ice cream except vanilla.

George Armstrong a descendant of GB Armstrong a principal in early 20th century pioneer enterprises in the Nicola Valley was in attendance.
