TGIF-Bear safety …

Adult Black Bear Canada October 31 2013

Bear warning signs
Black bear attacks are extremely rare. A threatened or predatory black bear will give off warning signs to let you know you are too close. If a black bear stands on its hind legs this is not aggressive behaviour, and the bear is trying to get a better look at you or “catch your scent”.
A defensive bear
A bear that feels threatened will:
salivate excessively and exhale loudly
make huffing, moaning, clacking and popping sounds with its mouth, teeth and jaws
lower its head with its ears drawn back while facing you
charge forward, and/or swat the ground with its paws (known as a ‘bluff’ charge).
A predatory bear
The bear will approach silently, usually in rural or remote areas, and may continue to approach regardless of your attempts to deter them by yelling or throwing rocks. If the bear attacks:
Use bear spray.
Fight back with everything you have.
Do not play dead unless you are sure a mother bear is attacking in defence of her cubs.

Returning salmon, look for spawning opportunity, Photo KDG[/caption]Salmon are seen in the Coldwater River, some dead after spawning some still looking for the right bit of gravel bed that was the water temperature from the time  the fish were fry here. Water temperature is all important for the navigation of returning salmon.

Black bears are also being seen near the water of the two rivers that meet in our Nicola Avenue, with piles of scat about town it makes for a caution that needs to be respected.

TGIF Salmon return

Have a great weekend!

The Nicola River this morning has returning salmon in it.The river level its self was noticeably managed this year with what seemed to be higher water levels and silt for some time. However today the returning salmon are quite visible  off of Voght street next to The Rotary Park turn coming into Merritt from the North on highway 5A.

A number of species run in the fall we generally expect Sockeye.

There was a city worker hat brought 8 tables into the old chamber office at 2158 B Voght Street for the polling place for the by-election. The city said it had to spend the same for the by election as for the general,$15000.00 however we think that the small office indicates that the general elections accounting may not have taken in regular city workers costs.
