Survey Stakes

The Hydro authority has been busy with the construction of a third 500 kilovolt line to the lower mainland from t the Revelstoke dam. lost in the shuffle has been a relatively minor additional line  to the Highland Valley from the Merritt Substation. The huge Teck corporation open-pit moly and copper mine is there and has been having its mill expanded.

The line to a substation in the Highland valley will replace an existing one that follows Voght street in Merritt now. The line in the 60 thousand volt range  will be replaced with a 130 thousand volt range line.

It was also planned that a cogeneration plant from a local saw mill burning green wood waste would add to the electrical production going to the Highland valley.

There is no word on the cogeneration project however on the weekend it was observed that the survey stakes have been placed for the new branch line. The new line follows the Coquihalla highway 5 north for away then heads to the Highland valley. survey stakes go right through Extra foods and Coyote bluffs residential development to the Merritt substation site that is currently being upgraded.

The line also follows an existing  just outrside Merritt Telus fiber line and comes close to a high pressure pipeline to Burnaby before veering off north of Saunders field  the local airstrip outside Merritt city limits.

Merritt is a very active place here after November 27th the countdown to Christmas starts then and a parade and midnight madness event starts it off. The local library is offering a 1000 dollars  in a contest that ends on November 26th.  The efforts that go into Christmas here are exceptional and sometimes quite heart warming.

The digital money company swag bucks are offering a Christmas preview sale for online shopping that ends on November 26th 20% off and 8 swag bucks ( 8 cents or eight percent) for every dollar spent on-line at Macy’s. The good will of the season is out there and is a significant value even for those involved in Christmas selling.

Q 101 is offering a draw for 1500 dollars in a home town shopping spree, ending December 9th..

The scenery can be very homey with snow-covered hills and a hush of the past looking to a new year.

Its good that it is friday….

Around the world in an MGB. We talked to Peter Buckingham and his co driver Kerith Buckingham in the local Coldwater hotel last night. Their  around the world MGB was parked outside as if to rest from its 2010 23000 KM 17 country trip.  Peter said they had started the trip by shipping the car to Beijing China. Peter had also done a bicycle trip in Mainland China in 1982, making for a good start point for the 2010 trip. The trip included northern Iran and 4 -6 thousand year old ruins in the cradle area of the world. He also shipped his car to Melbourne Australia for that part of his trip and its KM tally.

Peter is now capping it off with a trip across Canada west to east and estimates that before he is completely finished he will tally 40 thousand KM.

We hoped that he would not run into( tongue in cheek) John DesBourgh on his  bike trip for MS east , however a friendly road side interaction would be nice.
