There is a UFC boxing and fitness training offered  at the Lower Nicola band school some evenings.

A source says that a relative takes it up and it is a martial art.

Lower Nicola is a small unincorporated satellite community west of  Merritt BC.

There are some decent videos on the Swagbucks website for health and fitness including Tai chi. You can earn swag bucks while watching Michelle at Apex fitness, and others. A swagbuck is digital currency about a cent each .

Winter

The temperature is dropping to about -11 c today with serious snow on the ground here in Merritt at our 600 odd meter home. It feels homey and there is less traffic.

When we quipped to Everett Spahan that he was dressed like he had just come out of the Mongolian Step he affirmed the metaphor and posed for this picture.

There was a presentation of the Thompson Okanogan Tourist Association at the civic center, this week. About twenty people took the session in including Merritt’s Mayor Susan Roline, Councilor Clara Norguard, Councilor Kurt Christopherson.

The presentation outlines “what might happen here in Merritt in tourism” Merritt Councilor Kurt Christopherson”

Sandy Curnew the manager of the Downtown Tourist Info center was also in attendance.

The presenter outlined a need that tourism needs to have a continuity  province to province.

The local Tourist association has their AGM Thursday..

The Coldwater Hotel  on the corner of Quilchena and Voght is the hotel that has seen most of the post contact history of the city of Merritt. The Hotel was established in 1908 nad is now under a new owner John Allison a D jay and MC has ” Proprietor” on his business card. The hotels tagline is: The finest taste of history in Merritt.

The Hotel is in need of a paint job however in holds the confidence of many in the restaurant and pub. Recently I talked to a traveler enjoying a steak in the Pub . He and his wife had been around the world in a MG sports car .

Duct pack

The hydro ( or a consultant) here in Merritt are checking old manholes for compatibility for water lines today. A source says the real work to is a duct pack in the Voght street  and the burial of the power lines  that now are on the west side of the road. He also says that the top like goes to a substation in the highland valley and is high voltage up to 63000 volts.

The single line sits atop some ageing power poles at this time.

Merit of Merritt

Its good that it is friday….

Helicopter training is going on at an IBEW safety meeting this morning at the Coldwater Hotel. A source says its a five hour course facilitated by a teacher.

The power point shows multiple types of large helicopters including sky crane.

A source says that the transmission towers in the new 500 KV line are heavier then earlier ones used.

An source working  for the construction of the new hydro substation here in Merritt says that a 230 KV line is also going to Mamette lake to another substation in the highland valley. They were marking out targets for underground cables to cross the road on Voght street next to the old Days Inn site that was demolished and recycled last year.

Mamette lake is about 20 minutes from Merritt on highway 97 C  to Logan Lake BC.

A pleasant and interesting show on Sunday the 28th of July at Central park in Merritt.

Dew point

This morning at 7 am on the grassed boulevard there was a heavy dew. A fellow at Starbucks on a Yamaha Striker  motor cycle,that had come through he  highway from Hope concurred saying that there was fog and it was chilli as he passed to Merritt. Dew usually signals the end of the fire season here. And at one time was associated with wet legs from moose hunters that were out early in moose pastures.

Spear Head

There is a report  that a spearhead was found at the site of the new Hydro substation work West of the BC hydro yard off Voght street. The source said that there were also campfires with animal bones found in some of the gulleys leading down to the Nicola River. He said they were carbon dated and cane from antiquity.

There are historical pithouse remains at Monck Provincial park a few kilometers up the Nicola river on Nicola lake. the park system maintains them as an interest point.

Work was still in progress yesterday at the site. The new substation will increase the capacity and availability of power to business in Merritt. It is said to be  a two-year project.

4rth charging station

There is another charging station  here in Merritt for electric cars its located behind the Civic center off the sidewalk on a residential faced street.With  no over head pole and power coming from an underground service connection the unit looks neat and tight.

All four of the charging stations are within a block of each other and a person who used the one in the parking arena parking lot was pleased that the farmers market was going on at the same time as: ” there will be people around and we can leave it to charge while we go golfing”.Another user said he enjoyed use of the indoor public pool that is within a block of the charger while he waited the 2 hrs for a full charge. There are two chargers in the City Hall proper parking lot as well.

Chargers can be located on a smart phone app.

Stop line

A source at the ministry says that there are sensors in the pavement at the street lights on highway 8 Nicola Avenue here in Merritt. The sensors will change the red light to green but you must be behind the painted stop line stopped to activate it, and not past it waiting to turn. He said that some lights have cameras that do the same thing but you can also be out of the field of view for them to work.

Some old street lights are on arbitrary timers as well.

May is Palitive care month , we have an organisation here called the Merritt and District Hospice Society. A registered organization with an office open 9 am till noon Tuesdays. The office is located at 12″ 2025 Granite Avenue with a phone for the co-ordinator : 250-280-4040, mail 3451 Voght ,Street,Merritt V1K1C6.A table with helpful literature is set out in the public library today and from time to time. As a part of the month they are asking for volunteers, training in May. Call District office at 250-280-4040.
