Dew point

This morning at 7 am on the grassed boulevard there was a heavy dew. A fellow at Starbucks on a Yamaha Striker  motor cycle,that had come through he  highway from Hope concurred saying that there was fog and it was chilli as he passed to Merritt. Dew usually signals the end of the fire season here. And at one time was associated with wet legs from moose hunters that were out early in moose pastures.

Merit of Merritt

Its good that it is friday….

Around the world in an MGB. We talked to Peter Buckingham and his co driver Kerith Buckingham in the local Coldwater hotel last night. Their  around the world MGB was parked outside as if to rest from its 2010 23000 KM 17 country trip.  Peter said they had started the trip by shipping the car to Beijing China. Peter had also done a bicycle trip in Mainland China in 1982, making for a good start point for the 2010 trip. The trip included northern Iran and 4 -6 thousand year old ruins in the cradle area of the world. He also shipped his car to Melbourne Australia for that part of his trip and its KM tally.

Peter is now capping it off with a trip across Canada west to east and estimates that before he is completely finished he will tally 40 thousand KM.

We hoped that he would not run into( tongue in cheek) John DesBourgh on his  bike trip for MS east , however a friendly road side interaction would be nice.

3 cents a liter

The local petro can at the junction of highway 8 and 5 in Merritt is selling gas at 137.9 a liter . That is down from 1.40 on the weekend.

Merritt is in the center of 7 highways and has had a they as the hub of the Coquihalla at its chamber office in the past.

Merit of Merritt

Its good that it is friday….

Car show the local classic car bunch are having a show Sunday June 28th at central park, ( next to  the ball parks and police station on Voght Street. There is a strong club here for the size of the community including the local building inspector who was involved in the Mission raceway project years ago.

Learn to fish

Highland Valley Copper, the huge copper mine that employs 1100 union and 300 staff about 50 minutes from here has opened a community relations office across from the post office on Vought street and the corner of Granite avenue. The Community affairs and environmental team cosits of 11 people at the mine with 2 -3 of them available at the Merritt office. HVC is going trough a major expansion and upgrade of the mill and its buildings.

Mariena Anderson, one of those staffing the office talked of the openness of the mine and said that public tours are available all summer for those that come to the security building at the mine,on tour days.  there is also a learn to fish event coming up in September which is for 16 years and under. A full day including lunch will see instruction in Fly fishing and a catch and release experience in the Trojan pond. The Trojan is the reclaimed water from the Highland Valley milling process that is stocked with fish. Kate Garthwaite is the contact on the team for registration. Stop line

A source at the ministry says that there are sensors in the pavement at the street lights on highway 8 Nicola Avenue here in Merritt. The sensors will change the red light to green but you must be behind the painted stop line stopped to activate it, and not past it waiting to turn. He said that some lights have cameras that do the same thing but you can also be out of the field of view for them to work.

Some old street lights are on arbitrary timers as well.

Cougar

The Vancouver paper is reporting a cougar problem in that city in the lower mainland. When we asked local cougar hunter Kim Robinson this morning about it he replied that some times young cougars will go to populated areas because of pressure by large mature cats  that have defined territories in the surrounding hills. He said a one and a half-year old cougar will be sure of his danger from big mature cats that mark trees and post but not sure if they are in danger from humans. He also estimated that a big cat will kill 50 deer year and sometimes areas get depleted of that kind of food supply and they move. Large cougars will kill and eat smaller rivals according to Robinson

Pets and possibly small children may be in danger from cougars that have moved into the area.

Kim Robertson is noted to have claimed 250 lifetime big cat kills. A says they are in no danger for numbers.

Earth day: Canada April 22/13

The students (all) from the local high school observed earth day by going out on school time and picking up garbage. Carrying bags and wearing gloves many were seen to be about the river trails and paths.

Frost

This morning there was heavy frost on the ground, after snow on the weekend  that did not stick.

Crocus , tulips and daffodils are seen in yards that have sheltered  areas and warmth of soil conditions.

A consultation with Henry a participant at the farmers market and a serious friend of the with in a hundred miles thought said that he planted 80 odd romaine lettuce in side this week in anticipation of planting outside. He said they are frost hardy and lots of green vegetables are, common wisdom for less frost hardy plants is the end of May. Henry intends to have produce at the farmers market when it opens May 18th.

Calfs and lambs

A trip out highway 5A saw many spring calf’s and new born lambs along the road and in the ranches fields  that are intersected by the highway.

Once asked a local rancher Gloria Capp what the difference between a spring calf and a winter calf she replied ” one is born later”.

Nicola Ranch, Quilchena ,Cattle Company and  others along the lower road to Kamloops are quite pleasant to view from a car  as  it takes its way along the ” 70 percent load restriction ” road . These restrictions concern transports and commercial trucks and have made the route free of them at this time ,preferring 5  the divided highway with out load restrictions.

Blue box

A source in the City thinks that they will be distributing the Blue box  recycle garbage cans that complement the  gray lidded plastic cans for garbage in April or May. The cans have been siting in a pile at the city works yard waiting for  the go ahead from the powers. The same truck is divided into sides one for recycle another for garbage. A mechanical  hydraulic arm picks them up and dumps them into a compression chamber and returns them to the curb. This is worker friendly taking a lot of the risk of injury away from the one man handler.

Water sewer and garbage rates are being separated from the property tax levy on the billing  from City hall this year.
