Library break in,attempt

The local public library is closed this morning as in the night someone broke a window and smashed glass all across the room right to the reception counter. There is also  some dints in the metal door at the front of the library were it seems a more carefull entry was attempted.

A supervisor at the Garcia Street upgrade that was putting down rocks in the flower beds said that he wondered if they will mix with the windows of Granite Avenue. The public library had rocks for a ground cover untill removed a few years ago.  The rocks in the upgrade are small crush less likely to be a problem.

A posting says they are closed untill all the glass is cleaned up.A note to the thief says that the library staff think that those involved have not paid a fine lately as there is so they may no know only nickels and dimes in the building from small fines  and that they should get a card as borrowing is free.

A staff member at a cafe says that he thinks the library will be closed all day as the floor needs to be redone again with a soaking to remove all small shards. He was called at 12:04 last night to be advised about the break in attempt. He also feels that they did not enter and a bit of blood is on the window post evidencing a cut on the attempt.

The public library runs a number of programs for the young children and parents from time to time and sometimes pays for them with funds raised by “The Friends of the Library ”

Commitee work

A source at the city says that all the city committee s are disbanded , and councilors are not willing to sit on new ones. The City Center Board a committee of the city that was charged with the reworking and beatification of the downtown part of the city is most notable in the conversation that goes about. There is a lot of progress the last couple of weeks on the beatification and upgrade of Granite avenue and Garcia Street , to Quilchena after a lay off  for weather. Beautification is clear and large stars in the sidewalk with new benches and flower beds are a tremendous improvement. It remains to be seen why the board responsible is disbanded and the council back in control.

The granite avenue upgrade comes from a Canada Action plan infrastructure funding initiative.

Garbage

The regional government here; The Thompson Nicola Regional District gave out calendars at new years. This month the calendar picture is of garbage cans , two; one blue and one grey. They are buying a new truck and it will eventually pic up household garbage and recycle at the curbside. The City took out and add asking for a contractor to scan serial numbers and deliver these cans to households in Merritt. The cans will belong to the city and there is a list of maintenance demands published about them, including where to place them how to clean them and where not to put them in regard to snow. One of the chief demands is to keep the serial number in good condition and cleanliness.

A source said they will be collecting solon green to make into oil as a quip that’s  funny however there is getting to be a lot of this with smart meters and  wireless chip cards every where. We can remember when the district started running a landfill here it was completely fenced and had limited hrs. Numbers of people took garbage out to the dump about 6 miles to the west and when confronted with a locked gate they neatly piled  there bags oot side the gate. We think that they had hoped that there neighbours that worked a t the landfill would do the rest as this was new to the rural folks of this valley. Not so the Conservation officer was dispatched and garbage taken apart for evidence and some tickets for littering given. Some were challenged in court but to no avail.

The district conditioned was with a sponsored docu drama The Clean Bin Project  .  The film chronicled a couple that lived on minimal garbage for a year, they had no other point of view and had many awards, however no cautions about propaganda. It was a good public relation film and presented a view point that will lend heavily into compliance to a new waste pick-up system coming on board here.

Opinion :Be ready for similar action over this take nothing for granted as once occupied by the system it robs a big part of your emotional health.

The government takes garbage seriously.

This month is a leap year 29 days in it. There are 5 Tuesdays in it as was last month. The julian calendar that we use is politicized and Julius Caesar has his 31 day month as did his nephew Augustus: July and August . there is a full moon every 28 days and some calendars in antiquity had 13 -28 day months.

My niece has her 8th birthday on the 29th makin her 32 in dog years.  And according to Woody Allen ( he got his)every one gets their 15 minutes of fame including Caesar and those born on the 29th of February.

Snow

afghanistan

Image by The U.S. Army via Flickr

Overnight there was about 2 inches of fresh snow dropped on the town of Merritt. Sources say that more like 6 inches were the experience in Diamondvale in the east end. A distance of  about a mile. It is possible to be on the perimeter of a snowfall. Some people were late for work as they had to shovel out driveways and be concerned over some neighbours that were less able to cope. It is all over now. And sun and warmth are coming and we can expect the snow to abate to runoff within days as the highs are all above freezing in the coming week. We enjoy the freshness while it lasts and hope that people would take a moment to enjoy the fleeting beauty of the symbol used for the medal ” “The order of Canada” remembering that fame is fleeting and fortune fickle, in some people’s observation .

Bird count

Merritt, British Columbia

Image via Wikipedia

No not a character from Sesame Street but on the weekend the local Naturalists were out counting birds. A couple of reports say that there was a successful count of  many hundreds of mallard ducks by counters in the area of the Chutter ranch east of Merritt a couple of miles. My self, I counted 97 mallards in town from the Nicola Street bridge to the old CPR train bridge a distance of about 1/2 mile . At the bridge were a pair of golden eye ducks  at a healthy distance from the last mallard.

Jerry Sanford a member of the naturalist society and a retired geologist said he speculates that a motel owner may be feeding them at the Nicola bridge. The January 2 date should not be confused as it is the “Christmas Bird Count”

There is a coördinated bird count about the province on that day.
