Land Rovers are iconic to naturalist activity. The British built vehicle also had military application. A source says finding new parts for these in forgotten p0laces were the British military explored the world is a desirable. The vehicle above was made at a land rover business between Merritt and Spence’s bridge a number of years ago.
The 1948 to 1985 iconic style The series 1 was built by Land Rover in Solihull England. They maintain that 70 percent of the all aluminum body vehicles are still in use.
The ” series” version 1948-85 including 1,11,111 were rough riding and the transmission was not that synchronized and required skill in matching engine RPM to shifting. It remains the image most associated with the plains of Africa and deserts of the world.

The local congregation of the Anglican fold is looking for actors. The Church on the corner of Granite and Chapman is a historic site of this small community. meaning that it was foundational to the city and its incorporation and being at the beginning of the 20th century.

Al Clark a retired radio journalist, is an enthusiastic member and adds an air of professionalism to all activities. ( our opinion) Al worked at Q 101 and covered city business for many years, was well ahead on Bicycle Safety as being legally blind kept him from a driver’s license and helmets gave him comfort. https://www.facebook.com/al.clarke.3910?fref=ts

Waiting patiently! The 2010 Olympics saw the runners for the flame come through Merritt. File Photo: KDG

The 2010 winter saw Olympic success and our community had a part in the event. Toronto has to decide if they will submit a bid after a proven record of the Pan Am games. Volunteers make Canadian Olympics unique to a degree. Lots of luck to those involved and possible future involvement. Here’s looking at 2024, and is Toronto interested in 2028.It would be Canada’s forth Olympic Venue.

Toronto had interest in bidding for the 2020 or 2024 Summer Olympics, especially after their successful bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games. However on 20 January 2014, it was revealed that Toronto would not be pursuing a 2024 Summer Olympics bid due to bidding costs and a “next to no” chance of being awarded the games competing against a strong European and United States bid. Instead, mayor Rob Ford and deputy mayor Norm Kelly suggested that 2028 could be a feasible opportunity for Toronto depending on who is awarded the 2024 Summer games.[32] Toronto previously bid for the 1996 and 2008 games, but lost out to Atlanta and Beijing respectively. source Wikipedia

Merritt has three freeway options going by as well as a number of undivided highways with corners and easy pull off at lakes and rivers. These routes are sometimes preferred by groups of motorcycle enthusiasts.
A group of international firemen were coming into town on highway 8 from the Fraser canyon on the weekend enjoying the alternate route. They were planning on continuing to Kamloops on 5A and stopping at the historic Quilchena Hotel on Nicola lake.

Watch out for deer they can be devastating to a MC.

TGIF- Greyhound election

The press is saying that there will be an election call on the weekend making a possible 77 day writ period leading up to the vote. The fixed election date  on October 19th.That will be the longest election in Canada’s history a full month longer then the last one. This will, in our view ,give time for a lot of public transportation and public engagement of individual candidates. A lot of work and a challenges to keep parties on message, and responsive to voters.

There are some significant topics to discuss in energy, international involvement, domestic oil concerns, Senate etc. A town hall, style election is most likely the best way to accommodate these things. The stump should be low and the mandate charged with input.

One person one vote needs to be reinforced, as well as responsiveness after decades of international strife and engagements in huge issues a home-coming call would be refreshing.

The Nicola Valley cruisers had a car show for their classic cars on the past weekend. This Chevy product was part of it. Sam Roline said his grandmother purchased it  from the local GM Dealer  in 1966. The new car was inherited by Sam in 1988 and was a source of pride for him in the cruisers show.

Sam Roline is the partner to two term Mayor Susan Roline an other person with deep roots in the Nicola Valley and the interior of British Columbia.

Windy Canyon

There is a narrow canyon ascending to the south from the old Middlesbourgh town site at Merritt. The Sandstone was probably eroded by a long since dried up spring but the narrow walls give a shaded relief to the animal trails in it. Making it a pleasant hike. The canyon and trails surface on a field that once was home to an industrial coal operation before the 1st World War. Some bits of it remain including  some few broken bricks. The bricks are related in a sence to the bricks used to build the local armory finished in 1915. The 18 inch double, sand, filled walls of the building on Coldwater avenue’s 1800 block are according to Archie Rutz , an Elk member , who own the building, as coming from there.

Some dirt tracks lead up to the secluded entrance of the gully that is at about  50.09910 and 120.8026. There is also a 4 min google maps route available: Garcia Street to 1295 Midday Valley road.

In 1910 there  was also a railway for logging with a 6 percent grade in the area that went into the Lilly lake area and hooked up to the Kettle valley line. It is now a bike trail that goes to the Coquihalla area through Brodie and Brookmere.
