Monday evening saw a lunar halo ( ring around the moon), the effect was noticed just before 9 PM in a clear sky. The moon was not full however a very pronounced double circle including a outer blue was a matter of beauty and wonder.
While stargazing, have you ever noticed a large circular band of light surrounding the moon? If so, you have seen a lunar halo.
A lunar halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22 degree angle, creating a halo 22 degrees in radius (or 44 degrees in diameter). A double halo, sometimes with spokes, may be seen on rare occasions when light reflects off water or ice.
The prism effect of light passing through these six-sided ice crystals separates the light into its various colors, resulting in a halo tinged with very pale rainbow colors with red on the inside and blue on the outside. The phenomenon of a lunar halo is similar to a rainbow produced by sunlight and rain falling between your eye and the sun.
Weather lore says a lunar halo is the precursor of impending unsettled weather, especially during the winter months. This is often proved true, as cirrus and cirrostratus clouds generally precede rain and storm systems.
Lunar halos are, in fact, actually fairly common. So watch the night sky — and keep the umbrella handy. Source the staff at Farmers Almanac. http://farmersalmanac.com/astronomy/2009/08/17/ring-around-the-moon/

There was an ocean effect snow fall(our term) here in Merritt last night, as witnessed by a confused seagull circling the Rail yard mall , we can only imagine that the megalomaniac looking down would think that his droppings were not usually that pronounced.
Seagulls come with air flows from the coast and signal wind and weather change. The forecast is now to turn colder after the next two days with over night lows going to well below freezing for Friday and Saturday. Hope the snow lasts.

A tradition of Canadian Prime ministers is to go for a walk in the snow when contemplating calling an election. The PM still has that prerogative however elections have been put on a four year cycle with a semi fixed date. ( we don’t think it has anything to do with global warming) Jean Chretien went for a walk in the snow before risking trying for a 3rd term below. The fixed date is in May….

Fire fighting crews got a a break from the heat by way of heavy rain yesterday. Two helicopters were seen over the airstrip around noon, just before a brief ice storm was followed by a summer cloud burst. People were kept in the local Starbucks for about a half an hour as thunder and heavy rain fell. One conversation about what to do if the power went off, was answered by an offical, the plan is use the made coffee and call to see how long it would be off. If it was hours then the store would close. Editors note: most public buildings over a capacity have emergency lighting, some like hospitals have emergency generators.
Three days of rain are in the forecast from Wednesday, thursday morning is forecast to feel like 9 degrees c.
Friday should see partly sunny conditions with 25 degree C temperatures, here.

There is a lake up in the Coquihalla Valley , a small lake about 1000 feet wide in a narrow area. The lake has cabins on it and it is considered scenic. The access is off the freeway near the Juliet creek bridge, in the area of Larson hill. There was a fire South of there and presumable from the conditions of wind and conditions the two helicopter working to extinguish the fire had to go over Merritt and to Nicola lake to get their water buckets filled. The fire was discovered Monday, thought to have been started by lightning it has prompted an evacuation order for the residents in the area, of the fire, not Merritt. The order comes from the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
The Vernon info news has published what an evacuation order means to those effected by it: http://infotel.ca/newsitem/evacuation-order-issued-for-murray-lake/it11597
The absence of helicopters being seen going by Merritt Thursday to Nicola lake may mean that ground crews are in there and have a measure of control over the fire.

There was a new white Tesla motor car at the charging station, sitting unattended recharging from the 90 amp charger sporting a personalized British Columbia licence plate with the message that the car was “one great electric vehicle”. The car was backed in showing her lines and neat and clean as a whistle. The car’s plate demonstrating the on front view that provides a clear and clean shot for photo collectors such as toll booths. At one time there was photo radar in the province but it was nipped in the bud by a mandate that premier Gordon Campbell’s liberal government sought and won.
Tech giant the late Steve Jobs never had any licence plates on his Mercedes car to do that he had to buy a new one every six months because California law allowed 6 months before registration was required.
Technology is here to stay however we still have the privilege of looking a police officer in the eye when getting a speeding ticket.
