60 jobs gone

The people at Ardew were informed at 5 o’clock this morning  Saturday 13/13 that they were all laid off. The mill was being taken over by Aspen Planners after being acquired by them. The Ardew Mill is old tech without J bar sorter.:*

* Opinion: There will be a net job loss in that sector as Aspen Planners have two mills here before acquiring Ardew. One saw mill one planner mill .

The consolidation sees AP in control of  the Weyerhaeuser operation and the Ardew operation  , leaving one other   lumber producer here; Tolko Industries a private company that also had its start as a family business.

Other small mills include NMV and pine Ideas as specialty lumber manufacturers.

Blue box

A source in the City thinks that they will be distributing the Blue box  recycle garbage cans that complement the  gray lidded plastic cans for garbage in April or May. The cans have been siting in a pile at the city works yard waiting for  the go ahead from the powers. The same truck is divided into sides one for recycle another for garbage. A mechanical  hydraulic arm picks them up and dumps them into a compression chamber and returns them to the curb. This is worker friendly taking a lot of the risk of injury away from the one man handler.

Water sewer and garbage rates are being separated from the property tax levy on the billing  from City hall this year.

5000 meters

A motorman from Beaver Drilling gave us a conversation last week. He said he is working on a Double Drilling Rig , in the Rocky Mountain Foothills. For natural gas, his state of the art rig is usually involved in oil exploration. The motorman sowed me a key chain model bit and talked about whip-stocking a method of pulling back in a hole and stopping rotation of the String and hydrological turning the bit and controls a horizontally inclined take off. This makes for a managed drilling platform into a field.

Shale gas production has had a dramatic effect on supplies and the industry suffering is setting its hopes on conversions from high carbon use such as coal and oil to clean natural gas. according to the Horn River News in gas suffering Alberta, June 19th 2012, this may take years, and there are concerns it may not be timely for Alberta if major players go elsewhere.

The lady

About a hundred people of this small south central interior British Columbia community watched The Lady last evening at the local college lecture theater. A powerful storytelling of the the fight for democracy in Burma, the film seemed to hush the people as they left the building.”That was a good film” was one of the comments, I saw that 2 years ago at the coast another. However an overall mood of some reverence was very clear.

Red scarfed soldiers selected and given licence to arbitrary kill seemed to be one of the key elements in a muting of  unsolicited opinion. The fact that the Military allowed a free election May 1 and only won 10 seats of the 400 some also raised a sence of wonder about delusion and arrogance of unrestrained power.

The president of the group was heard to say that the film was attended by 87 members. Ron Brown was in the group, he was an election official here and supported mandatory voting. The group according to the president all voted in the tear off people’s choice with a unanimous excellent.

Hobiyee

The crescent moon on the bottom of the orb was beautiful to see last night and a source in the first nations community says that is a Hobiyee. She said that the more pronounced the spoon effect of the crescent the better an omen for a good year is.

The word Hobiyee according to the source is a first nation word from a northern area about Kitwanga. Thats the Prince Rupert area of north western British Columbia.

An interpretation of the moon is that it will be agood year, which may be in conflict with the Chinese lunar new year  that begins the year of the snake as some see that as not a good year. However some good celebrations are planned by the Niska nation:  Say’tKilim-Goot ( one heart, one path, one nation) at Gitwinksihlkw BC, at the TS’oohl memorial center February 22 and 23,2013.

The Niska nation is the first nation group that got a treaty from the Canadian government that includes some self-government and taxation authority some years ago and is being monitored for results.

TGIF- postal rate increase

A source at the post office says that the first class rate for a letter is going up within a week , to 66 cents.

The stamps you buy for first class do not have a price on them so stamps purchased before are honored as at the rate applyed no matter when purchaced.

This may be a sales technique however it does work.

Another source at a private Canada post retail outlet says the increase will be on Monday but isn’t sure of the amount.

Work a day

Little excitment about here today after the US Election but a sence that it means that the agenda continues and work a day style will also continue as well.

A college teacher was talking about high standards of completion of assignments being required by schools.

Some talk of the dynamics of the Republican controlled house on the agenda but no expectation of dysfunction from the US by regular people.
