Dog show

Voght park was used for a dog show on the weekend. Creditation under the agriculture act give an incentive to win a place in the various categories to give your prized pet an enhanced breeding opportunity. Hosted by the Nicola Valley Kennel Club, it was a three “all breed championship show”:with “puppy  sweepstakes and junior handling.”

With thanks to Eukanuba, permission granted for holding the events under the rules and regulations of the “Canadian Kennel Club.

A sweet little dog named Fee placed first in the herding on Monday, the park was replete with beautiful dogs and dog masters, judges and officials as well as clean up scooper.

A Boxer named Cody was reported missing after being startled by the July 1st fire work display.  Missing from its motel room in the Ramada, the striated dog was still unaccounted for at 11 am on the last day of the contest.

Schools out for summer

The local schools are out and the long weekend is looming. High schools and grade schools in the Nicola Valley have a good mix of farm families and often work on the farm is the activity of summer. However most every one takes some time for the National Holiday.

Douglas Lake Ranch, Quilchena Cattle Company,Nicola Ranch and numbers of others surround and peoplate the area. they are significant and sometimes regarded as a lifestyle as well as a vocation. Cowboy poets and cow camp culture is in easy reach of Merritt.

A new  business is operating in Merritt. The Source store has been open for a month and is  in the former Video rental location of Voght Street . On the way to Canadian tire on Forksdale avenue.

A clean and neat electronics store .On a visit they had three bright young , and helpful clerks hard at work .

The 2000 block of Quilchena hosts the CCMHoF, and it will be open this summer, a source says July and August. There is also coming in 2014 a national hall of music in Calgary.this hall of fame will be participating in that venue as well as displaying inductees plaques in the Merritt downtown location. the selection of inductees will remain with the
Toronto based CCMA .Canadian Country Music association.

Police helicopter

The area of town about the tourist info booth was busy with police presence this morning at  about 9:30. Constable Tammy  and at least 3 others were walking about looking in garbage cans and  taking notes. An unconfirmed source said that some one had been running. A police helicopter was later noted as being aloft. The police were tight lipped offering little engagement  to passers by. No barriers were up and it dissipated without sirens with in about an hour. A fire fighting crew  was noted as having lunch in the local subway that had been part of the subdued but note able police action.

The helicopter may have been un related.EN

The local bylaw officer said today that he is going to start enforcing the new signs on Mammete  to the Arena with tow first ask questions later. He says also that there is no special event provisions for the by law and that the two hr max is the law.

The area is  near the down town tourist info office and many business employees park on the previously un regulated street.

Tree planters ball

A bunch of tree planters working in the area had a masquerade ball on Saturday evening. A source said that the Desert Inn here in Merritt was packed and the event was very popular with the local worker.

We estimate about 300 people may have been involved.
