TGIF- Have a great weekend June Noctilucent clouds…

File photo KDG

According to many sources June has been a great month for blue night clouds. Noctilicent clouds have a stunning visual effect. They are made by ice crystals that are only visible in the twilight. They may be the result of increased methane in the atmosphere. The effect is also visible when the sun is low in the horizon and sunlight is still lighting white clouds.

Xeri Scape landscaping…

The Nicola Valley Aquatic Center and the local A and W have redone their lots in a Zeriscape style here in Merritt.

Smart Landscaping

n some areas, terms as water-conserving landscapes, drought-tolerant landscaping, and smart scaping are used instead. Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate to the local climate are emphasized, and care is taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off. The specific plants used in xeriscaping depend upon the climate. Xeriscaping is different from natural landscaping, because the emphasis in xeriscaping is on selection of plants for water conservation, not necessarily selecting native plants.

Grey Water

Using greywater ( free of pathogens) is an option for the thrifty and those driven by restrictions.

Greywater (also spelled graywater, grey water and gray water) or sullage is all wastewater generated in households or office buildings from streams without fecal contamination, i.e. all streams except for the wastewater from toilets. Sources of greywater include, sinks, showers, baths, clothes washing machines or dish washers. As greywater contains fewer pathogens than domestic wastewater, it is generally safer to handle and easier to treat and reuse onsite for toilet flushing, landscape or crop irrigation, and other non-potable uses.

In a world of disasters natural and man made it is hard to envision a carefree childhood. Some one in our culture came up with free universal education to grade 12; real help against the necessity of work. Employment standards free trade agreements World trade organizations have all helped. I would be good for some to see today as a remembrance day instead of a day to look, that will probably never be.

Happy National Cheese Day…

June 4th national cheese day.

Cheese is a staple commodity in the world. Cow milk production alone is over 500 million metric tons annually. Cheese is made from milk from a number of sources including goats, Lamas, Yaks and many other. However most non artisan cheese comes form dairy cows milk.

Artisan Cheese making at home.

Many cultural and traditional functions are observed at home and made better by food including cheese.

Since cheese-making is a process that predates the written word, nobody really knows exactly when cheese was invented. While historians believe that humans began domesticating milk producing about 10,000 years ago, all that’s really known about early cheese-making is that cheese was made in Egypt and Greece for thousands of years. Some historians believe that cheese-making may have been discovered accidentally when sheep herders stored milk in the stomach of an animal. This would have caused the enzyme found in the stomach of ruminant animals to coagulate the milk. The milk would have then separated into curds and whey. However, this is currently only a theory.
