TGIF- still married to the EU

UK and EU were happy once…

The UK is still parting from the EU. Today was the exit date preordained by the law that governs it. The UK is trying to get better terms for a split the EU is concerned about better terms for exit effecting the attractiveness of membership with other states. A European Union council election is coming May 22 2019. The UK has a soft exit date for mid April longer if some conditions are met.

The Nicola Naturalists will be having their April meeting on the 18th.

The Merritt-based Nicola Watershed Community Round Table has a new partnership with the Grasslands Conservation Council of BC, promoting education and research at the Laurie Guichon Memorial Grasslands Interpretive Site near Merritt. Thompson University Professor Lauchlan Fraser and FLNRO ecologist Rachel Whitehouse are leading this work and will give a joint presentation on the project. Controlling invasive weeds, like knapweed, is a huge problem across the grasslands of southern BC and this project is testing some innovative methods to maintain healthy grasslands. Exciting work happening right on our doorstep.

Together BC

The current government wants to reduce poverty by 25 percent and child poverty by 50 percent by 2024.

The plan also incorporates previously announced policies or investments made since July 2017 that address affordability, access to education and training, inclusive employment opportunities, social inclusion, and supports for family, children and youth.

The government also wants to address bus passes for the disabled as well as other things. Productivity is not mentioned in this context. Nor is dependency or self determination. Opportunity suffers some what as well!

However Kudos for the intent.

Sun sets at equinox week are more equal and faster to hemispheres, and spring shadows are shorter .

The minutes to drop below the horizon fewer.

The proximity of the sun over the equator this week will bring sunset faster in terms of dropping below the western sky.

The fastest sunsets (and sunrises) happen at or near the equinoxes. And the slowest sunsets (and sunrises) happen at or near the solstices.

TGIF- General Deterrent

Eight years for dangerous driving causing death a sobering sentence to those that profess to be professional drivers in Canada.

The Humboldt tragedy was suffering for mitigating positive outcomes to adjust to the horrific loss. The victims got one in the most severe sentence ever for dangerous driving, making a general deterrent to professional drivers.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is unlikely to appeal . If an error in law is found in the trial it would be a considerable contradiction in the attitude of regret expressed for the family to not cause more pain through more process.

File Photo KDG

So as the sun goes down on another tragedy, it remains that the best general deterrent is the sense of loss that comes from being responsible for other’s pain and suffering and the life long remorse of actions what could have been!

To him that did let me preen.

To them that suffered let them steam.

To those that stood by and watched, say no!

It changes nothing to take it back.
What's done is done and beyond your power.
Clear your slate and make a row.
To plant regret and hope to forget.

The mandatory reporting rules went from a thousand dollars to ten thousand for a minor car accident in response to a UBCM 2017 resolution and the provincial budget in BC.

To lessen delays and waiting.

The provincial government has amended its rules around mandatory police reporting of minor collisions. This move responds to a resolution (B83) endorsed by the UBCM membership at the 2017 convention. The updated Motor Vehicle Act Regulations increase the mandatory reporting threshold for property-damage-only (PDO) collisions from $1,000 to $10,000.

Any one hurt requiring medical attention is not a minor accident.

Editors note: To use insurance you need to report to your agent and you may not have the advantage of a police report for fault. Be careful failing to remain at and accident ( more then 10,000 dollars) or injuries is a serious criminal code offence. On advice leaving your name and phone number may be prudent in any case.

Earth Day 2019 is a month and change away, April 22 and spring are fast approaching!

BC Hydro has some suggestions to do for that day. ( without a trip to Paris)!

  • Stop Cutting the Grass ( water restrictions can only get worse, how about Xerscaping the back Yard.)
  • Make or Buy a rain barrel. ( more control of rain and roof run off)
  • Get air purifing pants to clean inside the house…
  • Be nice to bees and birds ( that’s how you got here) bee friendly plants!
  • And of course your brain wave and common wisdom…
