The local congregation of the Anglican fold is looking for actors. The Church on the corner of Granite and Chapman is a historic site of this small community. meaning that it was foundational to the city and its incorporation and being at the beginning of the 20th century.

Al Clark a retired radio journalist, is an enthusiastic member and adds an air of professionalism to all activities. ( our opinion) Al worked at Q 101 and covered city business for many years, was well ahead on Bicycle Safety as being legally blind kept him from a driver’s license and helmets gave him comfort. https://www.facebook.com/al.clarke.3910?fref=ts

The 2010 winter saw Olympic success and our community had a part in the event. Toronto has to decide if they will submit a bid after a proven record of the Pan Am games. Volunteers make Canadian Olympics unique to a degree. Lots of luck to those involved and possible future involvement. Here’s looking at 2024, and is Toronto interested in 2028.It would be Canada’s forth Olympic Venue.

Toronto had interest in bidding for the 2020 or 2024 Summer Olympics, especially after their successful bid for the 2015 Pan Am Games. However on 20 January 2014, it was revealed that Toronto would not be pursuing a 2024 Summer Olympics bid due to bidding costs and a “next to no” chance of being awarded the games competing against a strong European and United States bid. Instead, mayor Rob Ford and deputy mayor Norm Kelly suggested that 2028 could be a feasible opportunity for Toronto depending on who is awarded the 2024 Summer games.[32] Toronto previously bid for the 1996 and 2008 games, but lost out to Atlanta and Beijing respectively. source Wikipedia

Vandalism at the Merritt Public library on the weekend caused a delayed opening on Tuesday. The library that is normally open at 10 Pm every Tuesday morning stayed closed for most of the morning to accommodate a clean up of broken glass and removal of remaining glass in the window frame on the north side of the building. The Vandalism also resulted in a theft with the front door of a video player being broken open and electronic games taken. A source says that the electronics were recovered.
A source with a glass company attending the scene said calls to the library are down since they removed landscape rocks from the property. “we must have been here about 8 times in the past.” The library was built in the 1990s taking the area of the out of service train station, and moving from a building in the 2000 block of Granite avenue.
The library just received new carpet a few months ago.

Update: Electronics taken, a play station 3 and an I pad for children’s use are said to be in the hands of the Mounties, the I pad was said to have been found outside the building and the play station in custody is presumed to have left the property. The I pad is talked about having had blood on it.

A thousand tagged salmon

Looking for tagged fish. Photo KDG

Looking for tagged fish.

On Wednesday a pair of observers of First Nation origin were rowing down the Nicola River in a rubber raft. When challenged by the PR they said “we are looking for Chinook Salmon” .”We tagged a thousand of them last year and they should be here anytime” They run every year, said the person in control of the boat.
Merritt has two small rivers that join in the city. The Coldwater and the Nicola they continue as the Nicola to the Thompson at Spence’s Bridge and then on to the the Fraser and the Pacific ocean. There is a fish hatchery at Spious creek west of Merritt that is open to the public for tours. A serious fish tagging program is undertaken and a cabled intervention point is on the Coldwater River off the Voght park walking trail.
The Coldwater river was visibly seen to be suffering during the drought this summer but on viewing the this morning looks healthy and well due to rains in the Coldwater river valley high into the Coquihalla area to the south. The river is however void of fish at this point from a layman’s perspective and access. Chinnok Salmon are on the UNC red list for endangered species.
According to the local newspaper of record the city has announced plans to purchase three city lots on Charters street (* one is in the Nicola river) for a preserve.the lots are said to have access problems which may make them suitable for the preserve.

Chinook are anadromous fish native to the North Pacific Ocean and the river systems of western North America, ranging from California to Alaska, as well as Asian rivers ranging from northern Japan to the Palyavaam River in the Arctic north-east Siberia. They have been introduced to other parts of the world, including New Zealand and the Great Lakes of North America. A large Chinook is a prized and sought-after catch for a sporting angler. The flesh of the salmon is also highly valued for its dietary nutritional content, which includes high levels of important omega-3 fatty acids. Some populations are endangered, however many are healthy. The Chinook salmon has not been assessed for the UCN Red List.

Intermission :watch for choking

Dangerous toys
Common sense says that some things may be less then safe when not used in suitable applications. A small detachable piece, or a piece that can break off easily like a helmet could choke an infant.

The Product Safety Laboratory Method M01.1 push/pull test procedure specifies that a push or pull force of 44.5 newtons (10 pound-force) be gradually applied over a 5-second period and then maintained for 10 seconds. The procedure is completed on any part of a toy that is likely to become detached or damaged by the application of such a force. Following each push or pull the toy is inspected for relevant safety hazards such as detached small components, sharp points and sharp edges. More severe push/pull tests are mandatory in two instances:

for the eyes and noses of dolls, plush and other soft toys, a load of 9 kilograms (20 pounds) is suspended from the eye or nose for 5 minutes (see the “Other mechanical hazards” section of this guide). (Section 31 of the Toys Regulations)
for rattles a push/pull force of 50 newtons (11.2 pound-force) is applied (see the “Rattles” section of this guide). Some one dropped this packet from a scooter some time ago. There is a legal application for it according to some. An expert Dr.Zackery Walsh of the University of British Columbia psychology dept is going to present on its use and legality at the Merritt Public library on the 10th of October at 6PM.
Editors Note: while some people may need mood altering substance for medical reasons we feel that there is no place for either this or liquors anywhere around the work place, in particular equipment usage or heavy construction.
