4rth charging station

There is another charging station  here in Merritt for electric cars its located behind the Civic center off the sidewalk on a residential faced street. With  no over head pole and power coming from an underground service connection the unit looks neat and tight.

All four of the charging stations are within a block of each other and a person who used the one in the parking arena parking lot was pleased that the farmers market was going on at the same time as: ” there will be people around and we can leave it to charge while we go golfing”.Another user said he enjoyed use of the indoor public pool that is within a block of the charger while he waited the 2 hrs for a full charge. There are two chargers in the City Hall proper parking lot as well.

Chargers can be located on a smart phone app.

Stop line

A source at the ministry says that there are sensors in the pavement at the street lights on highway 8 Nicola Avenue here in Merritt. The sensors will change the red light to green but you must be behind the painted stop line stopped to activate it, and not past it waiting to turn. He said that some lights have cameras that do the same thing but you can also be out of the field of view for them to work.

Some old street lights are on arbitrary timers as well.

The website shows one haulage job advertised the source may not be current or the jobs are posted internally.

Cougar

The Vancouver paper is reporting a cougar problem in that city in the lower mainland. When we asked local cougar hunter Kim Robinson this morning about it he replied that some times young cougars will go to populated areas because of pressure by large mature cats  that have defined territories in the surrounding hills. He said a one and a half-year old cougar will be sure of his danger from big mature cats that mark trees and post but not sure if they are in danger from humans. He also estimated that a big cat will kill 50 deer year and sometimes areas get depleted of that kind of food supply and they move. Large cougars will kill and eat smaller rivals according to Robinson

Pets and possibly small children may be in danger from cougars that have moved into the area.

Kim Robertson is noted to have claimed 250 lifetime big cat kills. A says they are in no danger for numbers.

Ducks in a row

On Monday the Victoria day holiday a mother Mallard duck was on Nicola Avenue  ( highway 8) followed by nine new ducklings.  We followed them as they ducked into the Murray GM  lot and then out on Voght but on the sidewalk. After a block and a half they found a large bush in the A and W restaurant lot. The ducklings liked it and they lingered there, this after having a brief  and close inspection by a large Raven. We went for some bread and when we got back a women from Ashcroft said that they had gone north on Merritt avenue. Since that was the direction of the Nicola river and it  was within a block we got the sence that they would make it to a more comfortable and suitable environment.

A source says that they were probably chased from their nest on the river  about 4 blocks west on Nicola avenue by a dog.

editors note: There is an off leash park behind the recycle facility by Voght park and since that area is connected by walking trails along the Coldwater and Nicola River it is best it be used rather than having dogs off leash on the walking trails at this time when duckling and goslings are vulnerable.
