Contract

Peter Voight a local teacher says that the teachers in BC have a contract. The contract is yet to be  ratified. And it is retroactive  one year back nothing one year ahead nothing. However this district got par with the extended health meaning  to them as note worthy $150.00 in ortho and 200 in eyeglasses.

The teachers here hit the bricks in a two week strike earlier this year in a well organized and thoughtful job action.Opinion

Dog show

Voght park was used for a dog show on the weekend. Creditation under the agriculture act give an incentive to win a place in the various categories to give your prized pet an enhanced breeding opportunity. Hosted by the Nicola Valley Kennel Club, it was a three “all breed championship show”:with “puppy  sweepstakes and junior handling.”

With thanks to Eukanuba, permission granted for holding the events under the rules and regulations of the “Canadian Kennel Club.

A sweet little dog named Fee placed first in the herding on Monday, the park was replete with beautiful dogs and dog masters, judges and officials as well as clean up scooper.

A Boxer named Cody was reported missing after being startled by the July 1st fire work display.  Missing from its motel room in the Ramada, the striated dog was still unaccounted for at 11 am on the last day of the contest.

Have a great weekend, and visit merit and malice and rate them

A source at the city says that the car charger installed in the Voght street parking lot will be free for a time. The city economic development officer  James A.Umpherson, says that they are negotiating with the province and the company to see how that will shake down .

The site is GPS enabled and will eventually be available to smart card use. There is a sign saying the area is video scrutinized. No camera as yet visible. an although the charging cable is attached no one has been seen using it. Something that you would think would have accompanied the start up.

Schools out for summer

The local schools are out and the long weekend is looming. High schools and grade schools in the Nicola Valley have a good mix of farm families and often work on the farm is the activity of summer. However most every one takes some time for the National Holiday.

Douglas Lake Ranch, Quilchena Cattle Company,Nicola Ranch and numbers of others surround and peoplate the area. they are significant and sometimes regarded as a lifestyle as well as a vocation. Cowboy poets and cow camp culture is in easy reach of Merritt.

lightning damage

The storm on the weekend has the local hydro crew out repairing damage done to transformers. A source says they had five calls yesterday for fuses in transformers. And one call not in their jurisdiction. Three flagging persons and 3 vehicles deployed to repair. There is also a report of damage at a substation in Lower Nicola. Lightning and cloud bursts over the weekend have also caused people to say that the province was swamped with reports of flooding in places like Sicamoose.

There is little damage is visible here.

Hot tubs

The Regional District in conjunction with the city operates a good public swimming pool here in Merritt. The  hot tubs have been being replaced in a slow process over many months. A source from in the city says that it will not be complete before the 10th of July. And there is a possibility the completion will be right after that deadline.

The hot tubs are an accessory to a great pool with an exercise room and a sauna as well.

Chargeing station

The public parking lot on Voght street here in Merritt got a quick charge outlet . The 220 volt charge station with a single outlet will charge an electric car in 4 hours. the regular one twenty home charge can take up to 10 hours.

Chevrolet Volt and other electrics can run up to about 80 kilometers on a full charge.

Some electric also come with a small gasoline  engine to charge the battery while running.I talked to a fellow recently that came from Saskatoon with out stopping in an electric pickup so equipped.

The Canadian parliament abolishes capital punishment in Canada

No abatement

The rivers that flow through town are high and some say that watering restrictions are not in effect because of it . A source at the city says that this is not true. The restrictions for watering here in Merritt are still in effect.

Even number homes MWF, odd  TTS no watering by sprinklers on Sunday. Watering when done with an attended hose is always legal. Automatic /underground sprinklers 1 -5 Am. These regulations are said to be new in a brochure picked up at the city today.

The regulations are in effect from May 1st to September 30th 2012 and there is a fifty dollar fine for infractions.

Year end

The toastmaster organization year end end is at the end of June. The month of July will see the local club have a new president. Kathleen Joe will be the CEO of club 3929 here in Merritt.
