TGIF, Bear cubs

There is a report that 2 small black bear cubs were euthanized in the area after being discovered by equipment. Bears are a nuisance but they are a part of a eco-system that needs all its elements in balance to be healthy.

Logic would say that if habitat is being disturbed then care should be taken to keepthe life of animals and bird populations.
The decision is done in this case and cannot be reversed however we call for a more compassionate view and one that is symbolic of the care need to develop resources in a responsible way.

Garbage

The regional government here; The Thompson Nicola Regional District gave out calendars at new years. This month the calendar picture is of garbage cans , two; one blue and one grey. They are buying a new truck and it will eventually pic up household garbage and recycle at the curbside. The City took out and add asking for a contractor to scan serial numbers and deliver these cans to households in Merritt. The cans will belong to the city and there is a list of maintenance demands published about them, including where to place them how to clean them and where not to put them in regard to snow. One of the chief demands is to keep the serial number in good condition and cleanliness.

A source said they will be collecting solon green to make into oil as a quip that’s  funny however there is getting to be a lot of this with smart meters and  wireless chip cards every where. We can remember when the district started running a landfill here it was completely fenced and had limited hrs. Numbers of people took garbage out to the dump about 6 miles to the west and when confronted with a locked gate they neatly piled  there bags oot side the gate. We think that they had hoped that there neighbours that worked a t the landfill would do the rest as this was new to the rural folks of this valley. Not so the Conservation officer was dispatched and garbage taken apart for evidence and some tickets for littering given. Some were challenged in court but to no avail.

The district conditioned was with a sponsored docu drama The Clean Bin Project  .  The film chronicled a couple that lived on minimal garbage for a year, they had no other point of view and had many awards, however no cautions about propaganda. It was a good public relation film and presented a view point that will lend heavily into compliance to a new waste pick-up system coming on board here.

Opinion :Be ready for similar action over this take nothing for granted as once occupied by the system it robs a big part of your emotional health.

The government takes garbage seriously.

Appearence

A RCMP Sergent was to appear today in a circuit court, at 9:oo AM there was no name of
Stuart Seib the  relieved commander of the Merritt Detachment, of the RCMP was not on the docket of the circuit provincial court here in Merritt, to reporters from the local paper were inquiring as well  and only a few people interested in the local court activities. Harvey Keys m, a local business man who got himself on the ballot for the municipal election was  calling for justice. Harvey has been an outspoken advocate of cleaning up the illicit substance use ,mostly crack houses and may have tried to get elected on it. He was also upset that the local council had not gone after the contractor The RCMP for supplying a allegedly  using thieving commander to the local detachment here.

A sherif we  inquired of , said that he was on the court schedule for the 23 rd when asked if it was this month there was no negative reply. He also said he didn’t want to be quoted on that.

Editors note : We enjoy a fiduciary relationship with the federal government one that requires much cause to seek damages for injury in a court.

Opinion: We think that the issue is surreal and like the reasonable people who  didn’t take an interest this morning will fade away.

Gold Buyers

There is another gold buyer in Merritt this week they are coming regularly looking for silver and gold as well as old jewelry.

Canadian Collectors Road Show.

Treasure hunters and second handlers are a reality of many people’s life in a tough economy.

They are at the Best Western of Voght for four this weekend the buying ends today. They advertised free estimates and coffee.

Kevin and Nate a couple of young fellows were well involved this morning giving verbal appraisals on scrap gold and  artifacts. A small disagreement on the plate or silver content of one item in Kevin’s charge drew attention from Nate and seemed resolved amicably. We watched three clients sell small amounts of scrap gold for amounts under 50 dollars ,they were payed by cheque after producing a name  address and photo ID to back it up.

One of the buyers was a  Thailand  national with a long last name: Tungkulbavarodom. ( just want to test my spell checker.)

An assessment on a hard-hat made by McDonald company that had an artistic relieve of the industries wares on it confirmed a 300 to 400 dollar value, when asked if the owner wanted to sell it he said no but he would check with his son the owner for a possible nother day. When a man produced two tobacco tins of high-grade silver ore ” given as a souvenir from a mine site he worked at in the North West Territories , there  was much conversation generated, but no offer from the buyers to take the ore. A table displayed some silver antiques and antique toys with a 1939 Iron Cross, and some other war medals.

Coffee was offered as advertised as well as free appraisals without pressure to buy.

Bus service

two small buses run one at a time ,at about 4000 kilometers a month they are at 160,000 kilometers and a source says they  will be replaced with new ones at 200 thousand Ks that will be around Christmas time 2013.

The buses are operated by BC Transit and that is the provincial transit system.Only one full time job and some part timers including one that is retired from big town bus driving. The buses hold under 30 people but are equipped for wheel chairs and bicycles . They will also go to Kamloops and Kelowna on medical preference once a week for 5 dollars there and  return. You must book 24 hours ahead to make sure of service.
Opinion: We hope the new buses are as serviceable and maybe slightly bigger.
The service has an office in the back of the Chamber of Commerce building on Voght Street; just before the junction of Highway 8 and Highway 5-A on Nicola Avenue.
The service is subsidised.

Self checker

The local Thompson Nicola District Library, self checker has been being used for a matter of weeks and is expanded into the general collection from the function of signing out holds. When asked a confirmed source said that there are no plans for signing items in on the machine.

We used the equipment and it works well and it frees library staff to spend more time with people that need more help.

Self checkers are used in some grocery stores but not any in the community of Merritt.

Opinion:

Electronics are every where.  We wonder when the market will have respite from them in some sort of sanctuary. Or free zone. A connected world is certainly a different  world.
